Popup ads problem

I can't seen to get rid of these popup ads on my
computer. I get 30 - 40 at one time even when all
applications are closed and Messenger is closed. I was
trying to find where the program causing this problem is
installed but not having much luck.

I am also getting these annoying ads. Apparently the
software was developed by a company called Ad ProExtreme
www.adproextreme.com - I have not yet been successful in
stopping these ads from coming. from what I understand it
is something in XP that allows this to happen. Sorry I
can't be more help than that - let me know if you find
anything out.

I am having the same problem with a company called
endmessages.com I have found software on my computer
that was identified as a trojan horse, and removed it but
am still having the same problem. I have purchased
several security programs from McAfee in an effort to
solve this problem, but it just seems to be getting more
and more complicated all the time. I am monitoring all
outgoing/incoming comunications and am surprised at how
much is taking place without my pushing a button. I am
getting really paranoid now unfortunately, not feeling
that I have control over access to my computer.

Turn on Internet Connection Firewall - directions in Help and Support.

This question is asked and answered in these newsgroups dozens of times each
day. It's always a good idea to read a few days' posts to see if your
question has already been answered.

Tom;
These ads are using Messenger Service.
Messenger Service is a valuable tool many use.
Like many tools, it can be exploited.

No need to pay for the fix.
For Messenger Service ads:
You need to install or enable a firewall:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330904
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/communicate/stopspam.asp
Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve
the real problem.
The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom.
The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.
Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports.
The firewall controls the traffic.

Internet Connection Firewall will not work if you have AOL.
AOL is not compatible with Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
(ICF)
If you have AOL, you should contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party
firewall:
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/home.jsp
http://www.symantec.com/sabu/nis/npf/

Disable Messenger Service:
Start/Control Panel, click Administrative Tools, click Services.
Go down to "Messenger".
Right click "Messenger" and select Properties.
Then under Start-up select DISABLE
Click OK and follow prompts
