POP3 Duplicate Messages Problem

OL2003. If there is a server error during a POP3 retrieval (which is common
if the server is busy and stuff), Outlook doesn't seem to remember what
messages it downloaded up until the point of the server error. So when you
go to Send & Retrieve again you get all those messages duplicated. This did
not happen with Ol2002.

For instance, Yahoo! POP3 will sometimes give a "-ERR problem retrieving
message" I don't know why. But in any case Outlook should stop the retrieval
gracefully and "remember" the 50 messages it downloaded up until that point
and not download them again.

Is there a question here somewhere? I can certainly explain what's
happening, but you don't seem to be asking for an explanation. You don't
seem to be asking anything at allm, just stating a few things.

Do you have a solution? This problem has been discussed before and (with
truly all due respect and no offense intended) I don't need someone to
"explain what's happening." Because, well, it doesn't matter. It's a bug
that needs to be fixed. Someone "explained" that it was due to rules moving
the message to another PST... In fact, I think it was you who offered the
"do you have Stop Processing More Rules" advice- which I do. So that's not
the problem.

In any case, it's a bug. I have reported it to MS and posted my observation
here for other users. That is all. If you have a solution to keep this from
happening I'd love to hear it. Right now, I'm just about ready to revert to
using Outlook 2002.

If you've submitted your request to Microsoft, you've done as well as you
can do.

Um, solution to the problem... the thread after all reads "POP3 Duplicate
Messages PROBLEM." ;-) I thought it was obvious... but, what do I know?

Soooo, "do you know how to correct the bug where OL2003 downloads duplicate
messages from a POP3 server?" Yes, I'm running Office SP2. Yes, the problem
still exists. No, getting rid of rules that might act on the messages is not
an acceptable solution... especially since the bug didn't occur in OL2002
with the same rules set. No, I'm not an idiot... I'm a developer with 10 yrs
experience and have been using Outlook since it was called Windows Inbox
back in 1995.

P.S.
Also, this is a discussion forum not a question and answer session. If you
have a solution to a problem it would be great if you put it forward rather
than arguing semantics about how some poster may have neglected to say the
magic word to elicit your advice. I realize you are probably a regular
contributor and have probably helped a lot of people with problems big and
small... I don't mean to offend... but, sometimes folks get a childish god
complex on USENET.

The last person who reported this same thing was able to eliminate the
problem by first downloading all the existing messages and deleting them
from the server (i.e., unchecking the option to leave a copy on the server)
and then deleting and recreating the account, reenabling the option to leave
messages on the server.

If this were happening to me, I'd first try just deleting and recreating the
account. I'd then try a new PST, then a new mail profile, and then finally,
allowing the messages to download and delete once.

Thank you. I tried recreating the PST and profile way back and also a clean
wipe of the server but not in the exact order that you recommend (i.e. I
recreated the profile while the server still had a whole mess of messages).
I will definately try your suggestion. It sounds promising. Thank you again.

Well, that's just my opinion on the order of how intrusive the change is.
Good luck.

Some of my outgoing POP3 e-mail messages are being duplicated when received.
One message sent yesterday to 20 recipients was duplicated on six computers.
(One of the recipients was myself and I only received one message with no
duplication.) Sometimes the duplicate arrived with the original, sometimes
immediately after the original and sometimes minutes later. My ISP (Verizon)
checked out all settings and found them to be OK. They said I may have to
uninstall/Install OE6 to cure the problem. Any suggestions? And if I do the
Uninstall/Install will I lose all me e-mail records?
