I am getting pop ups by the dozen and I would like to get
rid of them. I have earthlinks pop up blocker but I am
still getting them. What can I do to disable the Windows
Messenger?

either activate the Windows XP Firewall or download and install a free
third-party firewall.
ZoneAlarm, kerio, Outpost etc etc.

Try EndPopUps (http://www.endpopups.com/), it works very well here.
About the Windows Messenger: Start the Messenger and in Tools >
Options disable "Run this program when Windows starts" and "Allow this
program to run in the background". Close the Messenger.
Run REGEDIT.EXE and navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express. Insert a new
DWORD entry
Hide Messenger
here and set it to a value of
2

Disabling messenger only cures the symptoms - not the cause. The cause as
open NetBIOS ports. the ONLY cure for that is a firewall.
