Pop up windows through messenger

I just recently boughta new laptop with xp. i have a large
number of pop-ups that I believe come from messenger
mainly selling products to stop the siad pop-ups! but also
selling stuff. It si very anoying I can stop it by
blocking the msgr program with norton however that is no
good since when the computer re-boots messenger will not
open. Do you have a fix.I did not get these in win 2000

Hey I had the same problem this is how you fix it.

Open Control Panel. If you have it in Category go to
Performance and Mantenance, then to Administrative Tools.
(If in clasic just click on Administrative Tools). Then
open Services once you are in. Scroll down until you see
the messenger on the list. Open it and where it says
Startup Type, click on Disabled in the dropdown menu.
Then hit the Stop button under the Service Status. That
should stop them from poping up.

ignore the real problem of an unprotected computer.
These ads are using Messenger Service.
Messenger Service is a valuable tool many use.
Like many tools, it can be exploited.

No need to pay for the fix.
For Messenger Service ads:
You need to install or enable a firewall:

Disabling Messenger Service can be a good idea, but it does not solve
the real problem.
The ads are not the real problem, the ads are only a symptom.
The real problem is open ports that allow unwanted traffic into the
computer.
Disabling Messenger does nothing for the open ports.
The firewall controls the traffic.

Internet Connection Firewall will not work if you have AOL.
AOL is not compatible with Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
(ICF)
If you have AOL, you should contact AOL and/or get a 3rd party
firewall.

Ever noticed that the majority of people suggesting "just disable Messenger
Service" are new posters here, with anonymous accounts at free mail
providers?

Combine that with the fact that they're fighting against the introduction of
firewalls, which have the effect of not only stopping the spam, but also of
stopping most network intrusions, and I start to wonder if most of the "just
disable the service" posts are done by hackers / crackers, who are irritated
that there's finally a reason big enough to motivate people to get up and
install a firewall. After all, with firewalls in place in every home, these
crackers would have far fewer opportunities to hack systems and distribute
their attacks on others.

I think it is more of ease and ignorance (However ICF is pretty easy)

Perhaps if everyone used a firewall we would see how few hackers there
really are as all the "hackers" unable to get through a firewall would
lose the title.
