POP: SOT won't acknowledge admin rights--Even in admin default

A

adrian

I bought the game Prince of Persia: Sands of Time but
after installing it and trying to run it a Windows error
pops up saying I must have admin rights to run. Then
another error says the game process has been manually
killed. The thing is I'm the only user on the machine
with admin rights--in fact I'm the only user on the
machine period. Here's what I've tried to correct the
problem, just so anybody willing to help can see what I
may have missed while doing so:
--Uninstalled POP:SOT and cleared out the windows\temp
folder as well as all registry references before
reinstalling
--Installed on the builtin administrator's account
--Installed and rebooted before trying to start program
(even though it didn't say it had to be rebooted)
--Created a new admin account and then tested all of the
above
I've made sure that all antivirus software was turned off
during the installations.

All the drivers have been updated and
windows updates have been downloaded. The specs of my
machine are below.

Windows XP
40 GB hard drive
1 GB of ram
GeForce 5600 Graphics card
1.73 GHz processor
DirectX 9.0b

What could be the problem? I'd greatly appreciate any
advice :)

Hi Adrian,

You could use Start / Run / regedit, search for the registry keys
associated with that game and make sure your account(s) have
full permissions to them, however I think repairing Windows
might be a *Safer* route to take. If not, setup a restore point.

Hi Adrian,

You would look under Edit / Permissions and ensure that your users
are added to that list and that "Full Control" is checked for them. :)

Jimmy--

O.K. I looked at the registry and in almost every instance
the registry keys and values had full control. For the
ones that didn't I set them to full control for my users
but the error still comes up. Are there certain areas in
the registry I can look in that would be able to alter the
neccessity of needing admin rights? By adding a new key
or value or something?

They don't have a category for computer user? Bummer. That's where I'd
fit. Now Jimmy, however . . .

Hey Jimmy,

I don't want to seem lazy or anything but I'd like to get
this POP issue solved so I can finally start playing
tonight.

Anyway, when I try to start the game an error message
comes up saying that the sound driver is already being
used by another device. At the time though, the only
other programs running were AntiVirus and Liveupdate for
system. I looked at the IRQ list and I do recall that
some lines were being used by multiple devices, but I
don't remember which. The sound is also gone when I start
Halo, so this most likely isn't a POP thing--again. Would
you (or anyone else reading this) be able to give me
advice on how to troubleshoot this type of situation?

Okay, now I'm completely blind sided. We went from problem
solved to a new POP issue. Update your sound card drivers
and test them in Start / Run / dxdiag / Sound tab. Good luck!

Jimmy,
Sorry to mislead you, the first time I checked to see if
POP:SOT would start I thought I'd be able to easily fix
the error so I didn't mention it, I didn't try to fix it
at the time since I was late for work.

Anyway, now once again my technical knowledge has fallen
short of being adequate. I tried to install the audio
driver only but my installation cd told me that I first
had to put service pack 1 on. So I put service pack 1a
on, rebooted and now the following devices are missing
drivers:

Nividia(R) nForce(TM) MCP Audio Processing Unit (Dolby(R)
Digital)

Nividia(R) nForce(TM) MCP Audio Codec Interface
MSI 8606 Video Capture
Ethernet Controller
Multimedia Controller
Nividia(R) nForce PCI System Management

When I try to install drivers from the installation disks
with the installation wizard, each time it says:

"An error occurred during installation of the device
Access is denied."

How do I get around this?

If you love to figure things out, then you'll be excited
to know that since I installed XPSP1a none of my USB
ports are working either. Neither my usb mouse nor my
jumpdrive are being recognized

Just in case this helps the following IRQ's are being
shared:
10: Ehternet controller
10: Nvidia nForce Audio Codec interface

11: Nvidia nForce PCI System management
11: Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host controller
11: Nvidia nForce MCP Audio Processing Unit

21: Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
21: OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller

I am looking on the internet for help as well but would
still appreciate any advice you're willing to give.
Thanks.

Okay, now I'm completely blind sided. We went from problem
solved to a new POP issue. Update your sound card drivers
and test them in Start / Run / dxdiag / Sound tab. Good luck!

Hi Adrian,

You're skipping steps in the instructions that I post; for example when I posted
the steps to repair windows it included a link to Windows Updates and suggested
that you install all critical and recommended updates which includes Service Pack 1.

Update all your system drivers, including video, sound, network, and chipset.

To update your Video drivers using the instructions at: http://mvps.org/nibblesnbits/Video.html#drivers
To update your chipset drivers, use Step 11 on that page.

Good luck Adrian! :)

adrian

Thanks for all the help Jimmy. I skipped the windows
updates at first because one of the drivers missing was an
ethernet controller so I couldn't log onto the internet.
I was able to get XPSP1 on through a jump drive and was
then able to log on. I've updated most of my drivers now,
and am pretty sure once I get my computer to an internet
connection again I'll be able to get the last two.

One problem I was wondering about was why I'd get the
message "Access Denied" when I'd try to install drivers
for everything listed in the Jan 23 message except for the
multimedia controller. I don't how it stopped but just in
case I run into that situation again, how do I get around
it?

| Jimmy,
| Sorry to mislead you, the first time I checked to see if
| POP:SOT would start I thought I'd be able to easily fix
| the error so I didn't mention it, I didn't try to fix it
| at the time since I was late for work.
|
| Anyway, now once again my technical knowledge has fallen
| short of being adequate. I tried to install the audio
| driver only but my installation cd told me that I first
| had to put service pack 1 on. So I put service pack 1a
| on, rebooted and now the following devices are missing
| drivers:
|
| Nividia(R) nForce(TM) MCP Audio Processing Unit (Dolby (R)
| Digital)
|
| Nividia(R) nForce(TM) MCP Audio Codec Interface
| MSI 8606 Video Capture
| Ethernet Controller
| Multimedia Controller
| Nividia(R) nForce PCI System Management
|
| When I try to install drivers from the installation disks
| with the installation wizard, each time it says:
|
| "An error occurred during installation of the device
| Access is denied."
|
| How do I get around this?
|
| If you love to figure things out, then you'll be excited
| to know that since I installed XPSP1a none of my USB
| ports are working either. Neither my usb mouse nor my
| jumpdrive are being recognized
|
| Just in case this helps the following IRQ's are being
| shared:
| 10: Ehternet controller
| 10: Nvidia nForce Audio Codec interface
|
| 11: Nvidia nForce PCI System management
| 11: Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host controller
| 11: Nvidia nForce MCP Audio Processing Unit
|
| 21: Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller
| 21: OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller
|
| I am looking on the internet for help as well but would
| still appreciate any advice you're willing to give.
| Thanks.

Hi Adrian,

"One problem I was wondering about was why I'd get the
message "Access Denied" when I'd try to install drivers "

It's possible that your account didn't have administration
privileges to install those updates.

|
I don't how it stopped but just in
| case I run into that situation again, how do I get around
| it?
|

Uh, oh. It seems like that kind of error could be the tip
of the iceberg then because when I got those errors I was
logged on as administrator...could there be any other
reasons?

Hi Adrian,

"One problem I was wondering about was why I'd get the
message "Access Denied" when I'd try to install drivers "

It's possible that your account didn't have administration
privileges to install those updates.

|
I don't how it stopped but just in
| case I run into that situation again, how do I get around
| it?

Hi Adrian,

Certainly, there could be another cause for the access denied
error message, for example a device could be in use while
you're trying to update it's drivers and unable to complete the
update. Most times this has no effect (for example it would
be impossible to update your video drivers if you couldn't
update the drivers just because you're using your video). :)

Startup in Safe Mode by pressing F8 to avoid this error.

| Uh, oh. It seems like that kind of error could be the tip
| of the iceberg then because when I got those errors I was
| logged on as administrator...could there be any other
