Poor printout quality

What would cause laser printouts of photos to be grainy? I'm printing from
grayscale images. Text looks fine on the same printer.

What's the size of the photos (in pixels)?

Many different sizes. It's not the image that's causing the pixelation - I
use megapixel+ images

If the printer isn't fairly new or expensive it could simply be due to
the low resolution. Unlike ink the toner doesn't bleed or spread at
all, so the same dot-pitch looks worse from a laser printer.

You might also try different dithering if that option is available.

What kind of printer, brand and model? What driver? What settings used,
dpi, etc? How much ram? Postscript?
