Poor audio on imported *.avi files from digital Camera

After placing in the timeline a video clip from my digital camera the audio sounds like a high pitched screech. When the clip is played directly in mediaplayer there are no problems.

Camera: Canon A60
file format: *.avi

It's probably a codec issue with MPEG2 source files. Playback/importing of
MPEG2 content is completely dependant on the third party MPEG2 decoder
installed on your computer. Most do not work well. See the Importing Source
Files... Video... MPEG2 page of www.papajohn.org

Guess I missed the file format of .avi so it's not an MPEG2 issue. Looks
like your camera uses Motion JPEG for video... so it's still looking like a
codec issue.

Have you tried using your soundcard as the default capture device(for audio). I did and the audio quality overall had less hiss and more clarity.
