pointer turns into mini-scroll bar

I have Vista Home Premium on a new laptop that has a Synaptic Pointing Device
pad.

Amongst other annoying features [like menu items being automatically
selected when I hover the pointer over them] I find that the pointer often
suddenly turns into what looks like a mini-scroll bar. This drives me nuts.
Can I turn it off? I can't find on it Help.

My previous computer was Windows 2000, so this pointer quirk is new too me.

You can't find it in help because it has nothing to do with Vista. It is
your touchpad driver options you have to be investigating.

As Richard replied, it's your touchpad driver that throws that "mini-scroll
bar" pointer. Your touchpad has a function to replicate the wheel on a
mouse. There's either a hotkey to enable it or an area of the touchpad
dedicated to acting like a mouse wheel. Open your touchpad utility and look
for a way to disable that feature. Good luck.

On yer task bar dbl click the Synaptics Pointing Device icon. If you don't have one, it should be in yer control panel. Click the Device Settings Tab to the far right. Select the 'Synaptics TouchPad Vx.x' and click settings.

New Window opens.

Click Virtual Scrolling and uncheck each (horizontal and vertical) box.

That should disable the virtual scrolling.
