PMEMNT.SYS failure

Hello -

The event log on my W2K Pro system reports the following
error at every boot:

"The PMEMNT.SYS service failed to start due to the
following error:
The system cannot find the file specified."

Despite this error message, a file named pmemnt.sys does
in fact reside in the C:\winnt\system32\drivers directory.

My questions today:

What is the purpose and function of the PMEMNT.SYS service?
What could be wrong with it on the system?
How can it be fixed?
