PLZ HELP BEFORE MY COMPUTER MELTS (Literally)

Guest

Hi i downloaded a program called PC Alert which tell the temperature of my
computers CPU etc. When i open it, it says that the CPU is at 130 degrees
celcius! The alarm goes off and a window comes up saying that my computer is
at an abnormally high temperature and that i should shut it down.
I am scared because its just a few months old!

Its a Dell Dimension 3100.
Pentium 4 with hyperthreading,
Media centre, (which means its on A-LOT!)

PLEASE HELP QUICK, THANKS

130 Celsius ? - Most Intel P4's are set to Throttle at 80C.
Are you certain the reading is correct ? On many motherboards
there are a number of thermal monitors. Sometimes, programs
will misidentify the sensor. Other times a motherboard may leave
a sensor unconnected and you can see astronomical readings.
(which are usually invalid).

I know nothing about your PC Alert program, but I'd download
SpeedFan 4.29 and use it to monitor your system.

Well it obviously aint working on your sys so uninstall it.
There are numerous free temp.monitor downloads, suggest you try another if
your that interested.
Or maybe check your Bios options there are often temp.settings there.

Thanks for the link to SpeedFan, but it doesn't seem to tell me anything,
when i go to temperature it says nothing,

The main thing is, what would happen if my computer did overheat? would it
shut down without warning? would a blue screen show up? or would it just die?

Thanks

That must be a false reading. Possibly the software is "confused" with your
particular hardware. Most CPUs will automatically shutdown when the temp
reaches 80C. You can go into the BIOS and more than likely find a utility
there that will give you a truer idea of your temperatures.

You would get some beeps from the BIOS and it would autoshutdown, unfortunetly
these new cpu's are easily heat damaged, if it does shut down, then most
likely the CPU is damaged, but as you said in your post, things were working
fine till you installed this new program, I expect the problem is with the
new software, not with the hardware.

BIOS has ultimate control over thermal shutdowns. If the temps
get dangerously high the PC will simply/quickly turn off.

Dells (both Notebooks & Desktops) have inadequate cooling. Most
times they only have the PS exhaust fan and a Channel cap for the
CPU. That means only two fans or one in a notebook. For Desktops
you might be able to add Fans if the design permits it.

For notebooks all you can do is install the 3rd-Party fan control
program to override Dell's idiotic thermal schema. (Fan Speed and
Temp triggering thresholds).

Just today I set up a new Dell Latitude notebook and it's idle temp
was a nice and cool 134-degrees Fahrenheit. Had to send the customer
to pick a USB port powered "Notebook Chiller".

Sorry, about using -F scale -but I'm too old to try and do C->F, F->C
conversions.

It could catch fire.

You could die. Plus your loved ones and your pets (except, perhaps, the
goldfish).

In fact, one airline, just today, prohibited Dell computers onboard because
of the reports that their Sony batteries ignite.

I am amazed no one has suggested you contact PC Alert. I found them using
Google. You can call them on 0408 339 411 (not sure which country) or email
them at (e-mail address removed)

Seems they must be in Australia.

isn't PC Alert for MSI motherboards.
do not believe dell uses MSI.

get a moniutor program from dell or use speed fan or MotherBoard Monitor.
