"Please insert a disk into drive..." error

My CD-R/RW and DVD+-R/RW drives do not recognize any
disks. I have tried these drives in antoher computer and
they work fine. I keep getting the "Please insert a disk
into drive E/F:," error when I use them in this
computer. I have already tried using differnet disks.
THe last time I remember burning a CD was about a month
ago. I just started getting this error about a week
ago. The OS reports the correct hardware in the hardware
device list. Could something have been corrupted on the
software side to prevent disks from being read?

Hi,

Does this happen all the time - meaning both when you are trying to read
from those drives and write to them? Or only for one specific application?

Have you tried the patch here yet? http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.htm, under
section 8 - Problems - there is a link to a patch that often resolves
problems with the system recognizing CD/DVD drives.
