Please Help!

Hi, I'm new to this group and I am having major problems defraging my XP.

At first I kept getting the message run Chkdsk when I tried to defrag but
nothing but a scan happened when I did it through command line.

Yesterday I read a post which said I should uninstall Zone Alarm, and when I
did this Ckhdsk worked succesfully after I restarted my computer. However
before I uninstalled Zone alarm I ran the edits on line 280 and 291 from
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweak.htm and after restarting my computer
I still cannot defrag and keep getting the message..

snap-in failed to initialize CLSID:{43668E21-2636-11D1-A1CE-0080C88593A5}

Please help, Sean.

.
this may fix it:go to start > run >regedit> edit tab >
find > type in 43668E21-2636-11D1-A1CE-0080C88593A5DfrgSnapin Class if it don't right click on default
modify and type that in exactly like that
DfrgSnapin Class
now push the + sign next to the file that opened in the
left payne, click on InprocServer32 the default should be
C:\WINDOWS\System32\dfrgsnap.dll
if not R-click modify that to read exacly that
C:\WINDOWS\System32\dfrgsnap.dll
under that is TreadingModel it should read
Apartment
if not modify it to read
Apartment
now highlite ProgID in the left and the right should read
under default DfrgSnapin.DfrgSnapin.1
if not modify it to read
DfrgSnapin.DfrgSnapin.1
under TypeLib the default should read
{CD83A785-6F75-11D2-A385-00609772642E}
if not modify
{CD83A785-6F75-11D2-A385-00609772642E}
under VersionIndependentProgID should read
DfrgSnapin.DfrgSnapin
if not modify
DfrgSnapin.DfrgSnapin
then close out the registry and reboot, now try your
defrag. It should work.Oh ya before you do this create a
restore point in case you don't do everything exactly as
I have it down, that way you'll have something to fall
back on if it messes up.But it's already messed up,so
your no worse off.

Thanks for trying to help. I followed your instructions succesfully and
restarted my computer, but unfortunately I still have the same problem.

Is it possible to uninstall lines 280 and 291? When I ran Chkdsk it did
work so the defrag must still be there somewhere. Maybe I could uninstall my
defrag and then download a defrag programme like DiskeeperLite?

Any suggestions? All will be gratefully recieved.

Sean.

Looked those up,there registry fixes,They set the
registry to the same as the directions anonymous gave
you.Its the easy way to set them back.Line 291 is
defragsnapin.exe and 280 is the file to force it to
run.Humm it should work. Those files will do the same as
the post that had you change the registry.I don't see a
need to remove them.Maybe run them again.Doing a google
search for your problem, have you had a 3rd party disk
defrager B4,if you did you need to uninstall it,if you
did you may need to download it again and re-
uninstall.you may have left over files.Look at this

0.html this site has a
fix that looks like it will work for
you

well i'm sure you can do your own google.com search,Good
Luck to you,and post back if any of these work for you so
we'll know how to help better in the future. Thanks

Hi Bob, thanks for trying to help.

I think your pointing me on the right direction, particularly in restoring
the windows defragmenter at AndreasRoom.com which seems to be the exact
problem. I did download a couple of defrag programmes about a month ago
(System Mechanic 4 etc) and then uninstalled them. I think that I need to
reinstall defrag.

However when I run command prompt as instructed it won't let me run the
defrag programme. Instead of...C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator> I
get the text C:\Documents and Settings\Owner> and I can't register the defrag
components.

I also tried to find and install dfrg.inf through windows explorer. I have
do admit I can't find Windows Explorer or the windows.inf on my XP. Any
suggestions as I think if I could install the defrag it would be the end of
my troubles.

Sean.

I've been trying to follow the instrucrions
