The recovery console is waiting for you to type a command. Type 'help'
<return> to see a list of all the available commands (but not what they do).

If you are getting a "Disk Error" message, your hard drive may have
failed. You can test this by downloading a diagnostic utility from the
hard drive mftr.'s website (or use Seagate's SeaTools). You will create
a bootable cd with the file you downloaded. Boot with this and do a
thorough test. If the drive fails any physical tests, replace it.

Standard caveat: Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out
suspected parts with known-good parts. If you can't do the testing
yourself and/or are uncomfortable opening your computer, take the
machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local
equivalent of BigStoreUSA). Have all your data backed up before you take
the machine into a shop.

Cheers Malke, i appreciate the help, i downloaded the tool and made a boot
cd, i didnt have the time to run a long test but however it passed the short
test OK.

I tried to run the microsoft windows recovery console again and still get
the same error...

A Disk Read Error Occured. Press CTRL ALT DEL to restart

I did notice a Erase drive on the seagate tool, if i use this can i get my
computer back to its original ship state?

Thanks again. Dave :)

No, you don't want to use an Erase tool. You want to take the time to
run the thorough test to make sure your hard drive is good before you do
anything else. After you've done that, if the drive tests good come
back. We'll need to know the make/model of your computer and also what
problems you were having that caused you to try and use the Recovery
Console in the first place.

Ok, thanks, when i get the time i will run the long test to see if any
problems are there, it would do my computer good to get it back to factory
state as it is running really crappy and slow, always geting error messages.
Will let know how the test goes soon.

Cheers.

Dear Dave, I had the same problem.

Did you convert your "C:\" drive from FAT32 to NTFS *after* installing
the recovery console, or did you change some parameters of it using
"Partition Magic" or any similar utility, again *after* installing the
Recovery Console?

In this case, you need to reinstall the Recovery Console in order to
recreate the file containing the boot sector that it needs to boot to
it.
