I am using XP SP2, and had installed Avast antivirus few days back which I
uninstalled (using the uninstaller) after using for a week. Now when I am
trying to install Kaspersky antivirus it says that the Avast is still
installed and the installation cannot proceed. How do I remove the Avast
antivirus COMPLETELY (so that I can install the new antivirus)?

You will find uninstall instructions at
http://www.avast.com/eng/faq-install-uninstall-avast.html and
http://www.avast.com/eng/faq-installation-problems.html.

Firstly, you should download the uninstall utility (aswClear.exe) from
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html. Save it to your
hard drive - but don't run the utility at this stage.

Next, uninstall avast in the normal way, via Control Panel | Add Remove
Programs. Then, re-boot your computer into safe mode and run the
uninstall utility, aswClear.exe. Apparently, you must run the uninstall
utility in Safe Mode. It is also important to perform both steps - and
in that order.

If you have followed those instructions to the letter and still have
problems, the support function on the avast website offers "Technical
Support", a "Knowledge Base", FAQs and a "User Forum".

The knowledge base article at
http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=12
may help. Also search against the keyword "uninstall" in the User
Forum.

One suggestion from the forum was to re-install Avast and then,
uninstall Avast again. At the second attempt, make sure you follow the
instructions precisely.

As an additional suggestion (which is not risk-free and might not help),
boot into safe mode. Then, open "Windows Explorer" and delete the
"C:\Program Files\avast!" or "C:\Program Files\Alwil" software folder -
with all its contents. Do not empty the re-cycle bin for the time being,
just in case you need to restore the folder.

Next, download and run Ccleaner from www.ccleaner.com. Click on the
Registry tab in Ccleaner and "Scan for Issues". If the Ccleaner scan
identifies registry entries that relate Alwil or Avast, create a restore
point. Then, use Ccleaner to "fix" those entries. If everything goes
pear-shaped, use the System Restore function in Windows XP to restore
the status quo.

well, if you utilized the
avast uninstaller, then
perhaps you need to
run a registry cleaner to
remove the orphaned
registry keys that are
named avast.

you can use "eusing
registry cleaner" or "one
care safety scanner"
or both to remove
the orphaned keys.

another thing is that i
don't recommend kaspersky
a.v., norton or micro trends.

so don't create another
problem for yourself.

here is a helpful link:

and another link where you
might ask additional questions
or obtain recommendations
on anti viral programs:

When you uninstalled , did you exit from the icon BEFORE you
uninstalled ?
