Please HELP!!! Repairing XP makes my Drives work in PIO mode

T

Tugrul

This is the 2d time I'm trying to reinstall XP due to many abnormalities
concerning some of my USB ports (disconnecting/connecting); display (for
instance some games stop loading), or icons & open windows refreshing
themselves; some programs not working at all (PQ's drive image: image
browser not starting, Outlook 2003 hanging, etc..). I don't want to lose my
settings and all, and I am trying to repair windows. I am able to fix all my
wireless network settings (lost after repair), but I am UNABLE to make my
drives work faster.
In device manager although it says DMA if available, UDMA 5 for Hard drives
and UDMA 2 for CD & DVD ROMs are not seen, but PIO only instead. It takes
ages for windows to start... and I restore the old image with the above
mentioned bugs and defects. Why repairing windows makes my IDE settings to
stuck to PIO mode?
Please help!!!!

Hello

Here is a solution back up your data and do a fresh install of XP

This will be my last resort. Every time I do a fresh install with backing up
files and settings, one moment comes and I realise that I hadnt backed up
something quite necessary. I dont want to live that again.

Hi, Tugrul.

Have you seen this KB article:
How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q315341

As it says, this is not intended as a time-saver for reinstalling WinXP
itself. it will take about as long as a fresh install, and you'll need to
visit Windows Update as soon as you get your firewall and antivirus working
again and get back online. There have been a LOT of updates, especially if
your WinXP CD-ROM does not include SP1; when I reinstalled my original WinXP
last month it took half a day, including a couple of hours (with broadband!)
to download and reinstall SP1 and later fixes. However, it should preserve
your installed applications and data and some of your drivers and tweaks, so
it should be quicker than a complete fresh install in your case.

Some of the problems you report sound like driver problems. Have you
checked with tech support at the websites for each of your hardware vendors?
(USB card? HD and CD/DVD drives? Graphics card?) Are your drives
connected directly to the motherboard, or are you using an add-on controller
or SCSI host adapter?

Hello

Well from what you said in your last post you have a lot of
different things going on and to try to fix your problem it's like
a needle in a hay stack. Well if you concerned about your outlook
settings, do a control insert and then past those settings into word
and save that document and no need to back that up. In the long
run you wil have to re-install.

What I suggest backup your important data and then install certain
things one at a time instead of doing a restore back, this will help you
narrow your problem down. I would load XP and see how things work
from a fresh install. and then make changes and then see how things
goes.

Thanx for the reply RC,

When repaired all abnormalities disapear. For instance I can browse Drive
Image's Image Browser, or play to Robin Hood Defender of the Crown (my
favorite game since my old CBM-64). The only problem is that slow
performance of the IDE channels. My USB 2.0 and Firewire drives work well. I
am just stuck with PIO modes in IDE channels.

I think I will go with a fresh install. I tried to repair twice with no
cure.

Then there is something wrong with your backup procedure. I just double
click an icon and every thing is pre-programmed especially when I do it up
to 7 times a week. (or lately last month - but that is unusual)
