Hello,

I bought SIEMENS SDRAM with a label that says:

SIEMENS HYS64V8200GU-8 8M x 64 SDRAM A2298510189 PC100-222-620

I was told these are 512 MB chips, but my computer only recognizes 64
MB. What is right?

Kind regards,

Frank

It may be that your pc cannot recognize high density SDRAM modules.512MB
DIMMS would most definitely be high density.
I've seen this problem a hundred times. Check the manual of your
motherboard and see what it says about compatible ram.Bet you it can't run
256 or 512M dimms.

The module's capacity is 512Mbits, ie 64Mbytes.

Here is the datasheet:
http://www.ortodoxism.ro/datasheets/siemens/HYS64V8200GU-8B.pdf

"The HYS 64(72)8200 and HYS 64(72)16220 are industry standard 168-pin
8-byte Dual in-line Memory Modules (DIMMs) which are organized as 8M ×
64, 8M × 72 in 1 bank and 16M × 64 and 16M × 72 in two banks high
speed memory arrays designed with 64M Synchronous DRAMs (SDRAMs) for
non-parity and ECC applications."

You can further confirm the capacity by identifying the individual
chips.

Thank you Franc,
that was very helpful!

One additional question if I may:
What would a SIEMENS tag say for a 512 MByte module?
Thank you very much in advance.

Siemens spun off their memory operations into Infineon years ago, and has
now been spun off again into Qimonda - they don't appear to sell SDRAM
DIMMs at all though they still show 256Mbit SDRAM chips. Before you buy a
512MB DIMM you'd better be sure that your mbrd can support it... and since
PC-100/133 DIMMs are an uncomon part now, it's going to be a bit more
expensive. Note that most 512MB DIMMs you'll see in retail now are DDR or
DDR2 parts. Here's a link to Crucial's PC-133 SDRAM DIMMs:
http://www.crucial.com/store/listmodule.asp?family=SDRAM&tabid=SDRAM,+PC133
or you can look up your system or mbrd starting from their home page.
Crucial's memory is highly recommended by most of us here.
