Is there a way to set up a "user" so that a particular
USER will not "see" any of the programs under "Start -
Programs",,, except the programs that I want that
particular user to be able to see and use? Now any user
can "see" ALL the programs available to anyone just by
clicking "start" and then "programs"...
I am new and trying to set up the computer for my
elderly father and myself and I dont want him to be able
to see or use any programs except those I install for him
to use... Thanks,, Anne

You haven't mentioned what operating system you are
running. This is achieved by editing the user profile for
both user accounts If you are running Windows 2000
Professional or Windows XP then do the following (I'm
assuming you have already managed to create the separate
user accounts for your father and yourself):
1) Browse to "C:\Documents and Settings\<Father>\Start
Menu" (replace "<Father>" with the name of your fathers
user account, and you will need to be using an account in
teh local admin group to do this)
2) Edit the shortcuts in this folder so that it contains
only shortcuts to applications you want your father to run
3) Browse to "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start
Menu". This folder contains the shortcuts that will be
put in every users start menu in addition to the ones in
the users own start menu folder i.e. the ones you just
specified in the "Father" folder. Its therefore important
to "cut" the shortcuts that are present in this folder
that you don't want your father to get, and paste
into "C:\Documents and Settings\<your account name>\Start
Menu" so that you still receive these shortcuts, but your
father doesn't.

Note that this will NOT stop your father from running the
programs if he can find them through Windows Explorer or
some other method. All it does is stop them being
displayed on the start menu.
