I noticed how sluggish the computer was processing. So I ran Adaware and got
results, cleaned that. I ran Spybot search & destroy, I received an error
message. So I uninstalled the program and reinstalled it, I did the updates.
I did a run and problems came up along with a funny message that I have
never seen before. So I chose to fix the problems. I closed the program and
noticed no difference in the computer. So I ran my McAfee. I kept receiving
a error message. So I installed AVG. I ran this program it found a virus.
This is the message: Trojan horse downloader.wren.f is found in file;
c\windows\downloaded program files\tetra.dll
I was given the option of sending it to the vault, so I did. I tried
running McAfee again, the program gets to the windows file and the program
closes. I am not able to retry unless I restart the computer. I tried to
clean my disk, the computer crashes. The tech at McAfee and I tried to find
some info on this virus, we were only able to find something on it at Spybot
search and destroy. It said that it is a hybrid virus, trojan and spyware.
I am being told that I will have to reformat my hard drive, I dont want to do
this. I also dont remember what to do. I also need to mention I tried using
the stand alone scanner provided by McAfee, Stinger. I get error messages or
either the computer crashes. Please Help someone!

maybe someone will give you better advise, but here's mine.
I find that, on average, I have spent at least 10 hours trying to fix my
computer
when it messed up from virus.
it takes 4 hours to "reinstall" everything from scratch.
I partitioned my hd in three parts:
C: is where windows lives. (30G)
D: is where all install files (web-purchased software, like AV stuff) and
drivers live (10G)
E: is data.(120G)

when you pop the XP cd in teh drive, and start the compuer, it runs the
install.
ther are good directions on how to do this on the web.
I'm sure someone here can give you the address.

have fun, good luck

To be honest it sounds like you may need to find a neighbor/geek to help
you reload PC. By sounds of it, giving someone $30 or so to eliminate
frustration may be easier in the end. I only make this suggestion
because you said "dont remember what to do". If you really want to fix
issue without reload, then more power to you and good luck.

Advise is a verb.

I may be stupid, but I'm not . . . nevermind. What does any of this have to
do with the problem? You can dress your HD in bunny slippers if you wish,
but it won't solve anyone's problem.

I have heard that running a spyware scan in safe mode is
more effective at finding and removeing those bad files.
Also problems do occur from conflicts when useing 2 anti-
virus programs on one PC. So pick one, and uninstall the
other. You may need to turn off the system restore, then
do a reboot to remove the virus backup.

You are needing to disable System Volume Information before running the
cleaner(s). To do so, right click the My Computer icon on your
desktop/Properties/System Restore/Turn off System Restore on all drives.
Once all is well, revert the setting.

Actually, he/she is correct on 90% of what was posted. Only because I am
not sure if a second Anti-Virus program needs to be uninstalled.

That said, what % is your answer based on?

Suck it up, get hold of yourself, stop embarrassing your family,
then save your data to a place off the hard disk, and do a
reformat of the drive and reinstall of your programs. Copy back
your data files to the hard drive.

Thanks to those who responded with helpful information. And to that guy that
said for me to suck it up and do back up on disks. At the time I had no
money to purchase any disks, therefore I was not able to do backups. You
never know what situation a person is in, so you should not try downing
people. You know what they say about assuming. You make an a** out of you.
