Hi all.
When I am trying to defrag my Dell Inspiron 9300 with XP 2 (with the Win
defrag tool or with " Perfect Disk" ) it tells me that it will not do it
because 'Chkdsk /f' is scheduled to run - although I did not scheduled it
to run !! I even stopped the "Task Scheduler" service, to no avail.
Now - whenever I start my computer - it takes about 3 to 5 minutes to boot,
I guess because it does perform the checkdisk task.
So good people, what should I do ?
TIA
Isaac

One more thing - When I am looking at the various solutions by Microsoft,
all of them refer
me to the registry -
- to the key " HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session
Manager\BootExecute " , and then I am instructed
to click "Modify" on the Edit menu and to than to type "autocheck autochk *
", and then press ENTER.
PROBLEM IS - I DO NOT HAVE THIS \ Boot Execute key (checked it many times
!!!)
Now what ?????
Thanks, Isaac

Hi!

I have been facing a similar type of problem as yours, on a slightly
different angle ...

I can't get Defrag to start, with a remark "please, first run chkdsk /f".
It's not possible to get it running because the disk is locked, so it will be
scheduled to be run on the next reboot. But, it won't be running either upon
the reboot!

The problem, yours and mine, is residing somewhere on the "dirty
bit/chkdsk/chkntfs/autochk" instructions arena, maybe there is some
corruption inside or close to them ... on the net there is numerous articles
found with these keywords.

I have been noting, the basic key value, i.e. no check requested, is
BootExecute REG-MULTI_SZ autocheck autochk *
and upon Windows' Disk Check request for C: it is changed into
BootExecute REG-MULTI_SZ autocheck autochk /r \??\C: autocheck autochk *

So, you may try manually to key them in, but as there may be in question
some corruption somewhere it may not help anything, and hopefully neither
causing any harm anywhere else ...

I may come back, if finding something new for this.

Best regards,

Pete V.
