Hi All,

Longtime lurker, first time poster..

I am trying to install a new virus porgram and cannot seem to get
McAfee removed from my Dell Dimension 8400 running XP Pro. I have run
all of the automated programs, tried to remove it using the system
removal tool, and tried to remove the files manually. But not matter
what, I cannot seem to get McAfee out! Please help I have tried
everything but I know there has to be someone out there who can help
me to get rid of it.

Thank you!

Use the issues feature in www.ccleaner.com and only tick to remove those
that say "mcafee" and when asked to back up before removing, do so. Use
their Clean Up feature first. It might not be a bad idea to do the same
thing in Safe Mode as Administrator. Course, all the time you've spent
trying to get rid of the bugger could have been spent on a clean install
which is the only sure way to remove all of Norton or McAfee's tentacles.

I had a similar problem with my Gateway laptop. I removed McAfee but the
Windows Security Centre still reported that it was running as well as
Zonealarm that I replaced it with.

This is the response I got from McAfee's customer service. They were very
helpful and this worked

"Thank you for contacting McAfee Technical Support. My name is Sandhya M.
Having reviewed your e-mail regarding "Unable to remove McAfee product", I
would be happy to help you, in resolving this issue for you.

I understand your frustration and realize that you have spent a lot of time
and effort in resolving this issue. I will do my best to help you resolve
your issue. Please follow the instruction to resolve this issue.

1. Click on >> Start >> Search >> type cmd.
2. Right click on the white space and select "RUN" as run as administrator.
3. A window with a black background appears. Type CD\.
4. Press the Enter key on your keyboard.
5. Type net stop winmgmt
6. Press the Enter key.
7. Type cd %windir%\system32\wbem
8. Press the Enter key.
9. Type ren repository repository.old
10. Press the Enter key.
11. Type net start winmgmt
12. Press the Enter key."

Hope this helps. I had earlier replies from the, including downloading the
removal tool, but they did not work.

Should have mentioned that it was a Vista machine but I suspect it should
work on XP as well but lines 1 and 2 should be replaced with Click Start
then Run, enter cmd and click OK.

Did it, still not working, I don't know what else to do~

You did not do what the first person suggested or the issue would be solved
by now. Here is the process again, tailored for Windows XP:

Start>Run>cmd [enter]
net stop winmgmt [enter]
cd /d %windir%\system32\wbem [enter]
ren repository repository.old [enter]
net start winmgmt [enter]

It may take a minute or so to complete while WMI rebuilds the database.

You should count your blessings!

You could be trying to get rid of Norton.
