Pleading Paper

I've been using Word 2007 for a couple of years now after using Word Perfect
for 28.
I've been struggling with section breaks even after reading Susan Barnhill's
and others' instructions. I have a pleading with two pages. After the first
page there is a next page section break -- it has a different footer and page
number. I deleted the footer and linked it to the first page footer. When I
tried to delete the next page section break the line numbers of my pleading
paper and the footer disappeared. I tried inserting a continuous page break
and then delete the next page break but that didn't work either. I'm stumped.

I have a new employer that has pleading paper set-up, although I don't
believe it's a Word template. The issue I've described above happens a
lot. I understand that the section breaks contain the formatting for the
text above it. What I did in Word Perfect was to create the numbered lines
and footer in a watermark (I wish Word could do watermarks line WP), so that
if text was deleted the lines stayed put.

I've seen some firms put the numbers on the left and the footer into a table
format as part of a header.

I guess what I want is the numbers on the pleading paper and the footer to
stay put even if all the formatting is cleared. Can this be done? I
probably didn't describe this very well. Sorry for any confusion.

One thing to note is that when you're in Page Layout, where you turn
on Line Numbering, you can have it apply to Whole Document or This
Section. If you make sure it's set for Whole Document, probably the
line numbers won't go away if you delete a section break.

Not sure what you mean by both "deleted the footer" and "linked the
footer to the first page footer." Remember you can change headers/
footers both via Different First Page and Different Odd and Even, AND
by entering a new section.

Note that there's a difference between Section Breaks and breaks that
aren't section breaks.

Word does have watermarks; though I don't know how they differ from
those in WP.

The pleading paper I'm using doesn't use the template.

When I use the template I have to customize it because my attorney likes
palatino type. So I change the header and footer to palatino type, 10 pt.
As long as I'm in double space the text lines up with the numbers. However,
when I need to single space and indent text (quoted material) and switch to
single space, and back to double space when the indent is complete, the text
doesn't line up with the line numbers in the header. Why would this be? I
hate it when the text doesn't line up with the numbers.

I tried both deleting the 2nd page footer and linking it to the 1st page
thinking that that would remove the second unwanted page.

Not sure what you mean my the difference between section breaks and breaks
that aren't section breaks; can you elaborate?

In Word when you create a watermark you are limited to a picture watermark
where you insert a picture, or a text watermark where you select from
predetermined single words.

In WP you can create a watermark based on a blank document and create
whatever text you want.

I really don't want to keep going back and forth on this. (1) You
didn't say anything about a template in your first message (other than
"I don't think it's a template"). (2) You didn't explain what you mean
by "I deleted the footer and linked the footer to the previous
footer"; you simply repeated it, and it _still_ doesn't make sense.
(3) Now you're complaining about some sort of "numbers" not "lining
up" with something. It can't be line numbers, since line numbers have
nothing to do with headers. When I use line numbers, they line up with
the lines, whatever the spacing of the lines is. (4) When you go to
Page Layout > Page Setup > Break, you get a list of ordinary breaks
(page, column, text wrap) and a list of Section Breaks. They are very
different things. (5) You also did not previously mention an unwanted
page.

Do you Show Non-Printing Characters, so you have a clue to what's
going on? You can see exactly where your section breaks, paragraph
marks, etc., are, and if your complaint is now that you are getting a
blank page, you can see where to delete empty paragraphs at the end of
your document.

The line numbers in your pleading paper template are just ordinary text
numbers in a box anchored to the header. If you want actual line numbers,
delete this box from the header and use the line numbering command in Word
instead (Layout tab of Page Setup).
