playing dvd's problems

Why does my computer not let me play films. Music cd's are OK and cd-rom's
thati get with the Times i.e. THe Month play ok. But each time I insert a
DVD iget a message that either REAL player has encountered a problem andhas
to close or windows media player has encountered a problem and has to close.
I'm not brill on pc stuff so i need good old plain english.

It is possible that there is a driver incompatibility. For instance, here
a specific DVD software player worked fine - until motherboard and CPU
were upgraded. After that, no go. Yet another DVD program works fine.

Windows Media Player does not natively handle DVDs, unless the DVD codec
is installed - which is usually the result of loading _another_ DVD
program. That being the case, consider installing a good commercial DVD
program. Here's just one (Power DVD)...
