Player can't "fast forward" maker movie

I used Microsoft Movie Maker to make a 2M/sec NTSC movie that was a WMV
file. When I play the movie in Microsoft Multimedia Player the bar at the
bottom to "fast forward" through the movie doesn't work. In fact as the
movie plays the scroll device just stays stuck on the left side of the
scroll area.

I am running Window XP and very current versions of movie maker and player.
