playback problem with mpg, mpeg files

Recently, my WMP 9 has not been displaying mpg or mpeg videos. I attempted to play back an mpeg, and I had audio but no video. I also attempted an mpg video, and it showed the file name and length and indicated it was playing, but I didn't have either audio or video on that one. When I checked for updates through WMP, it said I had all the necessary components. Perhaps codecs are corrupted? Also tried re-installing WMP 9, with no results. Why is this happening now when I had no problems before? My system is only 2 months old (XP home, 512 memory, 128 mb nvidia gforce fx 5200 video card). Please help. Thanks.

Have you watched the same mpeg's previously OK?
If so, it may be something you have done to the pc, have you removed the
mpeg decoder, like powerdvd? You need this installed to be able to watch
mpeg2's via media player.

I HAD A PROBLEM TRYING TO RUN DVDS. FIXED THAT BY
LOWERING THE VIDEO ACCELERATION IN THE
OPTIONS/PERFORMANCE WINDOW. IT HAD BEEN SET TO FULL.
MOVED THE PIONTER TO HALF WAY.
WORTH A TRY.
GOOD LUCK
