Hi Karen,

Not sure if the right readers would see your request under this topic.
There is a '[PL] PL2005 General Discussion' thread that might be more
appropriate. Try posting again there...just a thought.

I dunno. You've tested lots of programs for a long time. I've just
barely scratched the surface. . .

I don't see how I could vote for "Greatest Freeware of All Time" - I
don't know enough to make an intelligent choice.

Seems like a question for *experts* to argue about. . .

It was easy for me to see the good in that one vote category, since my own
decision on who I'd vote for (Irfanview) is so clearcut.

OTOH, if I had to go and choose my "top ten of all time," well, that
could take me about three years....

Oh, and also in my mind, when envisioning the special vote, it was the
curiosity to see whether the truly intense fans, say of Firefox, and
maybe too of Powerpro, might feel so strongly as to raise up their
champion onto that chair.
Seems like a question for *experts* to argue about. . .

I think what I might do is wait until next year, and then a bit earlier
into the PL process, and at that time probe around to see if anyone else
might have interest in adding such a slot to PL tradition... Maybe I'll
get only yawns, but I think I'll wait to find out at that time....

Thanks for the attention, Susan, on my little wish. I saw that earlier
you got charged, and fined, with Neglect. Today, I declare your services
as fully %100 attentive. Near complete, and you get to rest during naptime,
soon as you've given me my milk and cookies, and read me a story.

Being neither expert nor novice: I don't think this is a good idea,
although it sounds tempting at first encounter. While I like IrfanView
*very much* - it won't help me with editing databases, or with unpacking
archives, or with undeleting files, or ...

The selection for a "Greatest Freeware" would strongly depend on the most
recent experiences / requirements.

If you look back: The main reason for selecting PL programs in separate
(sub)categories was the intention to get a better comparability.

Are you sure it won't? I was pretty sure Irfanview did everything. There
was an old joke, think from Susan, paraphrase from memory, it's something
like this:

ACF FAQ

SECTION B. "HOW DO I...?"

Q. *
A. Irfanview.

Well, if others view it in that way, that it'd be unnatural to choose
one special standout, from pure affection alone, and outside of category
of function -- then I will just look instead to my consolation prize.
I'm anticipating that page for programs which have made PL six years
running. It makes for one spot where at least I can count on seeing the
worthy Irfanview honored. :)

It's not the best for everything. . .

Somebody said that a long time ago and was told that IrfanView makes
lousy coffee.

I think that's still true. . .

No, you just need to be sure you use the java plugin. :)
