Pivot Table Field List "crashed"

K

For lack of a better word. So, I basically live in Pivot Tables in
Excel, so I'm a little distressed. When I go into a file and create a
pivot table (or I go into an existing file with a pivot table, the
field list does not show up. This isn't a "just right click and
select
field list from the menu" type of not showing up. Rather, the outline
of the field list box shows up, with heading that says "Field List",
but no list inside. Instead it shows whatever was in the background
when you asked for the field list (usually it shows the cells behind
it, but I've had it showing pieces of my data instead of the field
headings (and again, this isn't "well, it shows you data becasuse
there are no headings" type of thing. Trust me when I say I know what
I'm doing in pivot tables (ie, it's not some little thing), but I'm at
a loss on this one.

Yes, I've rebooted, Yes I know about the layout view - and this still
seems to function, it's just too clunky a way to do things, Yes, I
have removed office and reinstalled (this is 2003).

So if anyone else has had or seenn this problem and has any ides, our
IT dept has been of little help, please let me know. Thank you so
much.

I don't have a guess, but...

Does this happen on brand new workbooks with new test data--or just a specific
workbook?

If you start excel in safe mode:

Close excel
windows start button|run button
type:
excel /safe
and click ok

Does it work ok?

Maybe it'll give someone a hint????

If it's just a single or a few workbooks, can you find someone with xl2003 to
test on their system?
