bought used laptop w/xp pro

My problem is that I can't get any "Windows Critical
Updates" due to piracy issues. Must I now go out and buy
my own Software?

You'll need to purchase a "Full Version" of Windows XP Pro and
then proceed to perform a "repair install".

If you knowingly how pirated copy of windows then you will have acept defeat
and either buy winXP or downgrade you're OS to a lower version that does not
have the same protection as winXP.

But if you brought the OS legally either as a seperate or pre-installed on a
computer then maybe you should be talking to a soliciter to try and get
you're money back.

You know that there is no other option, apart from trying to find a crack.

If you bought a laptop and your were also sold the license to use the
installed copy of Windows XP then you should have had the license
transferred to you in the appropriate way as described in the End User
License Agreement (EULA).
If you have a pirated copy of Windows XP installed on the laptop then you
will either have to take this up with the seller to provide you with what
you actually purchased or purchase a full retail copy and reinstall your OS.

Kurt - the original poster is not entitled to software that they did not pay
for or not had the license to use transferred to them in the appropriate
way.
Please do not suggest direct routes for the use of pirate software in this
newsgroup.

This is not the usual EULA licensing issue etc - this is a simple case of a
license to use a product not being supplied.

I didn't give a link, which you should surely know, I could have
provided. I suggested nothing, but only gave a direct & factual answer
to his question. I kept my personal judgements to myself.

I went to Kurt's web site. Saw his photo's of the Appalachian Trail hike.
Thought it was pretty nice. But with all his ramblings here you have to
know, he is a very sick man!

He is charging windmills, and loosing!

Greetings --

Are you trying to install Service Pack 1a and getting the
following:

The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q326904

You need to purchase and use a legitimate full retail copy of
WinXP Pro to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation,
using the new CD and Product Key.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;Q315341

Remember, you should also report whomever sold you the pirated
software to the pertinent law enforcement agencies; you've been
defrauded.

If you got a pirate version, don't expect to be able to get at support
or update until you get yourself legitimate by paying for a legal copy
