Pioneer DVD-115 not reading DVDs

I'm kinda at wits end with this one.

The drive is a Pioneer DVD-115 that doesn't read DVDs, only CDs, under XP.
The only time it will read DVDs under XP is if I boot 98SE first, then
restart into XP (My system is dual-bootable).

I thought a firmware update would fix it, but that had to be done under DOS
(out of 98) and it fooled me. A cold-boot startup into XP and the DVD
suddenly went blind with DVDs again.

I don't have the patience to boot 98SE and reboot to XP on my 700MHz Athlon
to get it working. Is there a driver/dll that needs to be installed or
replaced, a registry setting to change, or whatever?

BTW, I use DLA for UDF functionality.

That drive has some age on it. I saw a review written in 2000 for this
drive. It might be just that it is getting worn out.
Working with one form of media and not with another is one of the
symptoms of old age.

OK, there still seems to be life in the drive, since it does work under 98SE.
I also just tried several of my DVDs, and it did read one of them (Minority
Report DVD of Bonus Material).

I know a place near home where I can find a "new" DVD drive relatively cheap
if needed.

Tried uninstalling & re-installing in XP only? s
