Pinging & Sharing problems

Problem:
Without changing the network or the computers on the network, a functioning
network now has a workstation that is not able to share files or print to a
particular computer's printer.

The following facts have been determined about the office network:
All computers have no firewall on them.
All computers can see and talk to the internet
Problem computer has no viruses & spyware has been removed

Computer A (Problem Computer): WinXP Pro SP1
Computer B (Server): WinXP Pro (SP1?)
Computer C: Win98

Computer A: Successfully Pings Computer C only, can see shared files on
computer C. No connectivity with computer B, used to connect with no problem.

Computer B: Successfully Pings Computer C only, can see shared files on
computer C. No connectivity with computer A.

Computer C: Pings & shares with both computer A & B without incident.

I have tried the following with computer A:
deleted all spyware
fixed registry anomalies (with Norton Windoctor)
no viruses found
have deleted and reinstalled network card drivers and all network protocols
(except TCP/IP which windows would not allow me to uninstall)

David,

From your problem description, I'm thinking the problem could be in either
computer A or B. Have you done any diagnostic work on Computer B?

Maybe a little more detail will help us see the problem. Checking by both name
and ip address helps see if the problem is with name resolution, or with
connectivity. Testing connectivity, and shares visibility, helps see if the
problem is with the browser (not IE).

When you say "can see shared files" are you actually checking if shared files
can be opened?

Please provide ipconfig information for each computer - A, B, and C.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.
Identify operating system (by name and version) with each ipconfig listing.

Test connectivity from both Computers A and B:
1) Ping the other by name.
2) Ping the other by ip address.
3) Ping itself by name.
4) Ping itself by ip address.
5) Ping 127.0.0.1.
6) Ping the router.
Report success / failure of each test (12 tests total).

Test shares visibility from both Computers A and B (use actual name / address of
each computer as appropriate):
Start - Run then:
1) \\ThisComputerByName
2) \\ThisComputerByIPAddress
3) \\OtherComputerByName
4) \\OtherComputerByIPAddress
Report visibility of shares / error displayed in each test (8 tests total).

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
