Ping Not working from Clients

P

Paul Martin

Hi All

Got a SBS2000 system that I had a problem late last week with RAS and just
fixed it. But what I discovered looking into this (Exchange wasn't working
due to DNS problem) that the clients (Win2000 SP4) can't ping external ip or
domain names. Internal are fine. The server however pings fine to these
external sites.

I have double checked the DCHP settings and NC but can't see why the clients
can't ping but they can browse the internet throught the ISA server without
any problems.

I am I missing something obvious?

Cheers

I'm assuming that the internal clients can get to websites without any
problems.

Well, by design ISA blocks ICMP, which is what pings, tracerts and pathping
uses. You can enable it if you want, but it's blocked because it's
considered an intrusive protocol.

See the ISA newsgroups for more info.

Hi Ace

Thanks for the reply. I think I will leave as is it was just I have in the
past used PING to check connections and this is the only thing not working.

Hi Paul,

That's usually the norm with the block. I know it can get frustrating on
your end with needing pings for testing and such. If you want it enabled it
in the future, here';s a couple articles on it:

Allowing Outbound PPTP and PING on ISA:

http://www.microsoft.com/isaserver/techinfo/tips/pptpandping.asp
http://www.isaserver.org/tutorials/Allowing_Outbound_PING_and_PPTP_Connections.html

Cheers back!

Hi Ace

Thanks for the tip. Do you know of any other pages that I can use to check I
have the network connect through ISA correctly? I have two PCs that are
experiencing connection problems to the ISA server, they keep saying can't
detect ISA. I configured them the same as the rest and can't see what I am
doing wrong. PING was a handy way to 'quickly' test connections.

Cheers
Paul

Force the IP address or name of the ISA in the IE properties?

I would suggest hitting the ISA newsgroups for more info here Paul. I teach
ISA and have used it many times, but it's been about 8 months since I've
used it.
