I'm trying to rename some of my pictures; however, it says, "if you change a
file name extension, the file may become unusuable"
does anybody know how to fix this problem?

Either include the file extension when you rename the file
(e.g. filename.jpg, picture.gif) or do the following:
Go to Start -> Control Panel
Double click on Folder Options
Click on the View tab
Make sure there's a check mark in the box next to "Hide
extensions for known file types".
Click OK

To expand a bit on Nepatsfan's comments: if, for example, you see a
file "abc.mp3", and you rename it to "def", you have just taken away
the file name extension, thus making the file type unknown. What
Nepatsfan is saying is that you should retain the extension when you do
the rename i.e., specify "def.mp3", not just "def". On the other hand,
if the file name extensions are hidden, then all you would be seeing is
"abc", in which case you CAN rename it to "def".

The free program, IRFANVIEW, has a nice batch file renaming
program that keeps track of file extension, it is nice to be
able to select a group of pictures and change the name from
100001121.jpg (and other numerical sequence) to
springbreak1.jpg to springbreak1000.jpg with just one step.

What problem? The message you're getting is correct. The extension describes
the kind of file it is, and if you change it, the software that you probably
want to use on the file will not recognize what kind of file it is.

For example, if you double-click a file called picture.jpg, whatever image
program you use will open the picture. If you change the file's name to
picture.xyz, neither that program nor any other image program will know what
to do with it.

You can change the part of the name before the extension (for eample, change
picture.jpg to PictureOfMary.jpg), but don't change the extension.
