Pictures Disappeared

I am using PowerPoint 2003 and was well into a slide presentation with over
150 slides with pictures and lots of graphics. I did a run through and save
at the end of the day and all was well. When I opened the presentation to
continue to work the next day most - but not all - pictures were replaced
with white boxes with large red X's. I know online that this means the
picture cannot be displayed. Any ideas as to what happened? I fortunately had
a backup copy that is fine except for a couple days work... Is there any way
to restore the original?

Hi,

Out of curiosity. Were the images simply inserted or were they pasted in out
of another program? What file type were they?

Glen,

Some were imported using the icon in the placeholder (not sure of the name),
most were put in using Insert - picture from file. Some pictures were "batch"
inserted into one slide then moved by copy and paste to other slides - I did
notice that many of these did not fill the placeholder but sat on top of it.
Most pictures are jpeg some that i was using for animations are .png cutouts
from Microsoft digital imaging. The change to red X was not consistent
throghout the presentation - both jpeg and png were affected - and some of
each survived intact.
