physical Router address

Your best bet is to drive around and see where the signal is strongest, and
walk up to the door and ask.

Carefully, and during daylight. Would YOU want some stranger coming to YOUR
door, asking about your computer network?

Well, actually there is.

If he finds the last IP address in the rerouting chain and that IP address
is static, then the rest may be history. I mean, there are public databases
of ALL owners of IP addresses and their LEGAL (not physical) addresses. The
owner of that IP address may be on the Grand Cayman but his business is
using it in Chicago where Dan lives.

The next step for Dan is to write them a letter spiked with good, expensive
perfume and with his girlfriend's name for a signature.

Theoretically he can (possibly) do it even with a dynamic IP provided the
ISP keeps a record of all their leases for at least a couple of weeks and
they will be so kind as to give him this incredible assistance.

ISPs will protect the privacy of their customers, to the legal limit. Look at
the RIAA and their "I want the name of the owner of this IP address" shit.

No reliable ISP is going to look up a customer name, and provide it to any
stranger who writes them "I need to contact the owner of this IP address".

No, he just should approach a desk clerk at that Hilton Hotel, a Hispanic
woman, with a vocabulary of 20 English words and ask her point blank:

"What is your frea*king IP address?"

I got some bad information that leads me to this I think. Somebody told me
if the owner of the router changes the name of the device I will get bumped

From what you described I no longer have to worry. Thanks.

By establishing a shared cost now or mutual agreement I am seeking to avoid
the hassle of going back to my 56k or setting up the same service I am
getting now for free. That’s all really.

I guess you would have to see the area in around my home. We are about 30
homes on flat land with one hotel on the right. I know everybody around me
somewhat. What stops me from just asking around? This is a delicate to some.
Imagine an Unknowledgeable suddenly hears that “somebody is using my

Again I am having trouble sending the post. What a weird thing. Why is it
so selective?
I just could not post this during the day from my office with a static IP
address. I am wondering if Chuck may be a part of it with all his denial of
paranoia as a problem. Now I will try it from home where I do have another
static IP.

Dan, I am beginning to understand your concerns.

The SSID cannot be changed by the owner. What he can do is to change or
reset the password and the user name. I think your laptop (give thanks to
Vista for that) signs you in with a default password and user name. The
other fellow gave you those. However, I should warn you against ever
trying to sign in. All that "moral" garbage Chuck advertised is nothing as
compared with it. Although you will have no legal ramifications for doing it
but, I hate to say that, "morally" it is a considerable elevation. It is
like breaking and entering. I always try to put myself in the shoes of the
other guy if I would do something like this. It is kind of gross.

I would consider it a godsend, like winning a lottery, a small bonus for
your exceptional honesty or whatnot. Just enjoy it.

Linksys router is a piece of junk. I is employed by people with no
sophistication. Setting up passwords across a network is a hassle requiring
some dedication. After every power outage the passwords are reset back to
default. Passwords are easily forgotten. A person who owns that linksys may
set himself for small trouble if he tries to safeguard himself against
other people leaching into his hot spot. It creates considerable
inconvenience. Instead of enjoying his music he will be running around
resetting
passwords and that is not easy for a non-professional.

Dan,

This isn't really a forum devoted to WiFi, this is a Vista forum. To explore
the issues of "borrowing" / "hijacking" / "leeching" a WiFi connection, you
really should ask about this in a forum that is devoted to WiFi. One
possibility would be microsoft. public. windows. networking. wireless.
<http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windows.networking.wireless?hl=en>
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windows.networking.wireless?hl=en

Another would be DSLR Forums - WiFi Networking.
<http://www.dslreports.com/forum/wlan>
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/wlan

The issues aren't simple, as Alex would have you to believe. Legally, if you do
anything more than using NetStumbler to identify a neighbours WiFi LAN, you are
breaking the law in some states. Yet, I dare you to call your local PD (911 - -
right) and tell them "Help! Somebody is stealing my WiFi!".

Get into the right forum, Dan. Get informed.

For some reason, Dan my posts (I've tried a number of times) stopped getting
thru. I think Chuck with his MVP powers turned his unidirectional antenna
away from me as far as this thread is concerned. So, if this will be an
exception I want to point it out to you that you should think in terms of
multiple scales. He is trying to scary you with an improbable event of
prosecuting someone for listening to his neighbors music while criminal
gangs roam the internet unhindered, break into people's computers daily and
happily get away with it.

Thank about it for a moment and you will realize how pathetic his ridiculous
quotations and references are.

A few years ago I decided that I needed GMRS radio. I bought what is
essentially a walkie-talkie. it required a license. I bought it for $80. I
think it is good for 5 years. I used it a few times before I realized that
it had no practical value for me. Nonetheless, afraid of consequences I
joined a forum, asked questions, read their ridiculous answers full of self
righteousness and self-importance. Then in the process I realized that the
spectrum is practically empty. Nobody uses it except for some construction
workers and only very rarely. Nobody gives a sh*t. Nonetheless I was warned
of dire consequences if I violated precepts or broke rules.
