Physical memory in Vista 32-bit

I have Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit Edition, and it says it supports 4GB
of RAM. I have only 3GB installed, and yet the computer says I only have
2GB. On the support page, there is an entry about why Vista may show less
RAM if all 4GB are installed, but why does it not recognize the 3GB I have
installed?

1. Go to the Start Orb, type "MSCONFIG" (without quotes) in the search box
and press enter.

2. Click on the "Boot" tab, then "Advanced Options".

3. Uncheck the "Maximum Memory" box if it is checked. It may be checked and
set to use your old amount of memory.

This is the most common reason I see memory upgrades go un-noticed in
Windows (other than the 4GB Limit on 32Bit Windows!).

If that doesn't solve your problem, what other hardware do you have in your
system? If you have video cards with lots of RAM (8800 series with 640 or
768) it may take more than the 1 GB or so that it normally takes.

Hi,

What does the BIOS see for installed memory?
What motherboard is being used?
Desktop or laptop?

It should recognize more or less all of the 3gb.. you may well have a stick
that is either not working, or not compatible..

I have seen reports of Vista having touble recognizing all of the memory in
a system if the system has an odd number of DDR2 Dimms installed instead of
an even number. Apparently it does not want to recognize the slower speed
memory caused by an unmatched DDR2 dimm when a matched pair is also present.

Check for memory remapping/hole in your BIOS. It should be disabled

is this a dual-channel mobo? if so, I can't understand how he has 3GB -
either 2GB or 4GB, as I understand it.

also, I understand that vista allows sharing of system memory, by file
pages, index, devices (esp. graphics cards) if, and only if , the memory is
maxed out - not maxed out then no taking of ram space by devices

just this newbie's 2 cents!
