PhotoImpact 7 Color Scanning

B

Bill Bradshaw

System:

800 Mhz Pentium III
512 Megs Memory
Nvidia 6600 256 Meg Video Card
WinXP Pro SP2 w/All Current Patches
HP R80xi All-In-One

All of sudden I am having problems (previously worked fine) scanning colored
images into PhotoImpact 7. I can scan black and white and grayscale without
a problem. When I scan color I can preview fine but when I scan the full
image PhotoImpact quits responding, CPU usage goes to 100%, and I get an
error message for the u32scan.dll of:

Twain error. [T009] Error enabling the TWAIN data source. [T020]

I have searched all over and can not find any help.

I can scan colored images into Iranview and Xnview without problems.

I have seen the latest issues with the Microsoft patches and HP equipment.
Even though the issues do not seem to apply to my setup I did patch the
registry.

Can somebody here help me or direct me to a source of help.

Since your problem seems to be with PhotoImpact 7 only, I suggest that you
may have a corrupted file in PhotoImpact 7. (the 100% CPU is a tip off).

You should uninstall PhotoImpact 7, reboot, then re-install PhotoImpact 7
from the original installation CD.

I should have included in the original message that I had already performed
an uninstall/reinstall of the program. Also cleaned the registry before the
reinstall and ran crap cleaner.

OK, how about replacing the file u32scan.dll?

Now I do not know what the source of that file is, it could be part of the
TWAIN driver or it may be a part of Windows.

When you get the error message, check the details button and see if the
error message says where the file is located other that in memory.

The u32scan.dll version information shows it is a PhotoImpact file. I have
searched the internet but have not found any replacement files. I am going
to check if Ulead has a demo of version 11 of PhotoImpact and see if that
has a later usable version of u32scan.dll. But I am getting further.
PhotoImpact will scan the image in color at low resolutions. At higher
resolutions it returns a T031 error. Do you know of any sources that list
Twain error codes with a description of the error?

What about compatibility problems with your version of PhotoImpact and
Windows XP?
SP2 is a great upgrade, but there are known problems with some software.

Your version of PhotoImpact is an older version. You may need to upgrade.

If twain.org does not have the codes published, I have no idea.
http://www.twain.org/

On the download page is a PDF of the TWAIN specification.(It may have the
error codes. See Page 8 of the PDF, heading 10.7).
http://www.twain.org/download.htm

Very likely, your error is not coming from the TWAIN driver, it seems to be
a PhotoImpact error.

Well I feel pretty bad about all this because the scanner is working fine.
It is a parallel port connection and it takes a long time to move high
resolution data from the scanner to the computer. If I am patience enough
the scanner will work at high resolution scans. I do not have enough time
to be patient :). I think I am going to buy a new dedicated USB scanner.
I think it will be a lot faster and I will not run out of patience.

I am sorry I wasted your time.

No waste.
Up grading is a good idea!

Some of today's USB scanners can scan letter size at 300 DPI in just 30-40
seconds. And scan 35 mm film at 3200 DPI.
