[phish] problem in subject line of e-mails

A

Anthony

When I receive e-mails from senders, initially I receive them without the
word [phish] in the subject line, then within usually one second, it places
the brackets and the word phish in the subject line of all new e-mails, what
is going on - these problems are getting old. Can anybody help?

Windows Mail isn't doing that.
Are you using third party security software that includes an anti-spam
feature?

A

Anthony

Thanks Gary, but windows mail I believe was doing that. I went into tools,
options, advanced, and there was a box checked that said mark threads that I
start as 'watched' - I unchecked that box, restarted my computer and all is
fine. My e-mails were only being marked from replies of messages that I had
previously sent out, so when I unchecked this box, now all seems good - I
have NO idea how that box got checked in the first place.

I have no idea how marking threads as 'watched' could cause the word
[phish] to be prepended to the subject line. In my 11 months of working
this newsgroup I have never come across that scenario.

Well I was just as surprised as you are, but as soon as I unmarked that check
box, it STOPPED! I wish you could tell me why I can send an e-mail with a
different user name (not the default) and then people reply to me - then when
I hit reply, it uses the default user ID/name instead of the original one -
it never used to do that either, but now it does. I'm still trying to figure
that one out too. I wish I would have never bought a computer with Windows
Vista - I never had this problem in the past with previous windows.

A few people have reported that problem about the default account
being used for replies rather than the account which downloaded
the message. Again, that is something I have never come across
personally, so I'm at a loss to explain how that could happen.

So then what do you suggest in the way of how to resolve this particular
problem when replying to e-mails - how to we get the answers - open for ideas
- thanks!

Is there somewhere else we need to be researching to find these answers etc.?

The easiest way to fix those problems is to upgrade to the newer
Windows Live Mail program:

Hi Gary, thanks for the advice and the help regarding these problems - with
the upgrade advice to the newer version of Windows Mail - is that a free
upgrade???

Will it change the layout/appearance of Windows mail very much??

Again - thanks.

I haven't heard of a newer version of Windows Mail.

Microsoft seems to be planning to switch to Windows Live Mail, and
offering it to you free:

Windows Live Mail is a separate program, and it is free.
I often call it an 'upgrade' to WM, although technically that is not
correct. The reason I often characterize the switch from WM to
WLM that way is because of the seamless way WLM imports all
your WM accounts, settings, rules, emails, folders, etc.

You can configure WLM to look like WM, although it also has
the option (like Outlook) to have three side-by-side panes.
One significant difference is that WLM uses a separate set of folders
(Inbox, Drafts, Sent items, Junk e-mail, Deleted items) for each
account, while WM (like OE) uses a unified set of system folders.

WLM has some improvements over WM, such as the real-time
spell checker (underlining typos immediately with a red squiggly),
auto-correction of commonly misspelled words, and better auto-
completion when typing in the recipients. Also, when adding a
Contacts group to the address line, WLM (unlike WM) allows the
group to be expanded so you can delete some of those recipients.

If it turns out you don't like WLM, merely uninstall it, and WM is back
just like before.

Gary,
I am having a similar problem to Anthony. When an email is returned to me
the bracketed word PHISH has been added to the subject line. If the email is
returned and then returned to me another (PHISH) is added to the subject
line. This continues until the thread is discontinued. I have noticed that
the majority of the time this effects one specific address, although as I
checked back through my deleted addresses there are a few others that have
had the problem
I tried Anthony's suggestion, but it didn't work for me.
I have been all over the web looking for this problem and Anthony seems to
be the only other person posting this (PHISHY) problem.
About the same time, I have been told that some of my emails are being sent
to the Spam or Bulk Mail boxes of people I have emailed for years.
I am using Windows Mail/Vista Home Premium with Starband as my provider.
McAfee is my security program.
Any suggestions?

Like you, a web search for [PHISH] didn't turn up any likely suspects
for me.
The most likely culprit is your McAfee software. Unless you can find
an option within McAfee to turn this feature off, I suggest you uninstall it
and replace it with something more compatible. Even aside from this
issue, both McAfee and Norton security programs seem to cause an
assortment of problems with Windows Mail. You can download and
install a more compatible antivirus like:

AVG free edition:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/us/frt/0?prd=aff
or
Avast free edition:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

With either of those, during the install phase you must select custom
install, and then deselect the email scanning option.

I'm also having the [PHISH] problem. In adition, I also receive mail with
[SPAM] in the subject line. Right now I use McAfee on both my XP and Vista

Windows Mail is not adding those labels.
Uninstall McAfee and those problems will disappear.
McAfee antivirus is not compatible with Windows Mail.
