Phantoms i can't kill

P

Paul Lady

The following is a message I get from the system admin. It is coming from
an account that I have inactivated in send receive groups, and is going to
an email address that I have removed from my contacts.
Please explain and please help. This is OL 2002 upgrade from IMO OL 2000
(which Russ says is a bad idea, but I'm there and don't know how to go back
or recover)

Thx, pjl

OK, got the new profile created and running.

How do I populate this profile with all the stuff in my old profile?

The import option does not show an Outlook option, and I'm brain dead on
other options.

Thx, pjl

When you created the profile, you should have designated your former Outlook
data file as its data source.

Russ, thx for the diagnosis. I'm having a problem with not knowing how to
do that. Did I accept a default? Is my Outlook data file the "outlook.pst"
that I think is in the default location?

Can you please point me to a set of instructions on this subject?

BTW, I'm still getting phantoms. When I set up the new profile, I added
(mistakenly) my spouses email account, which we need to check from my
machine on occasion. Then I found that I could not turn that account off in
OL2002, like in OL 2000. Then I deleted it, yet my phantom address still is
sent messages from this "dead" location. What gives with this? I guess
that I need to set up another profile and not make the same mistake,
correct?

TIA, pjl

I have done searches for the invalid address, for parts of the invalid
address, opened all parent records that might contain the invalid address
and manually checked for a rogue entry someplace (in email 2 and 3). All to
no result. It's like there is a phantom server someplace in my system that
contains the invalid data.

Like the messages that show as sent from the address that I eliminated from
my mail accounts. I'm in a loop here because I can't find anything to
explain the problem.

It jumps out and bites me from time to time, still.

Russ, clearing autocomplete sound very productive. I did a search and did
not find a good instruction reference. Can you please provide one?

Thx, pjl

No.
Have you tried clearing your autocompletion cache to see if that stops the
behavior?
When you created a new profile, did you create it from scratch with an
entirely different name?

Russ, thx and I'm on the case. Just FYI, my problem seems to be
related
to
contacts that show in the address line as "name(name)" rather than the
normal "name([email protected])".

I have tried to find the source of this name(name) business and eliminate
it. Am I chasing the wrong phantom? How can I eliminate this
behavior?

TIA, pjl

Yes it does. This is what you want to do.
Go ahead and create a new profile, then use this method to reset it to
use
your old PST file.

Does this apply to OL 2002?

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010771141033.aspx

TIA, pjl

Russ, thx for the diagnosis. I'm having a problem with not knowing
how
to
do that. Did I accept a default? Is my Outlook data file the
"outlook.pst"
that I think is in the default location?

Can you please point me to a set of instructions on this subject?

BTW, I'm still getting phantoms. When I set up the new profile, I
added
(mistakenly) my spouses email account, which we need to check
from
my
machine on occasion. Then I found that I could not turn that account
off
in
OL2002, like in OL 2000. Then I deleted it, yet my phantom address
still
is
sent messages from this "dead" location. What gives with this? I
guess
that I need to set up another profile and not make the same
mistake,
correct?

TIA, pjl

When you created the profile, you should have designated your former
Outlook
data file as its data source.

OK, got the new profile created and running.

How do I populate this profile with all the stuff in my old
profile?

The import option does not show an Outlook option, and I'm
brain
dead
on
other options.

Thx, pjl

The best way to fix all the problems that upgrading from IMO will
cause
is
simply to create a new Outlook profile. Let's do that first. Make
sure
you
recreate your mail accounts from scratch and use the same Outlook
Data
file
you were using before.
The instructions here will apply to Outlook 2002:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;829918&Product=out2003 It
is
coming
from
an account that I have inactivated in send receive groups, and
is
going
to
an email address that I have removed from my contacts.
Please explain and please help. This is OL 2002 upgrade
from
IMO
OL
2000
(which Russ says is a bad idea, but I'm there and don't know
how
to
go
back
or recover)
