Personal Settings return to default after shutdown

I recently shut down my Dell lapotp, which I've done hundreds of times, and
when I started it up and hit "OK" to log into my owner account, I received a
message saying my personal settings couldn't be loaded either because of a
"corrupt local file" or "insufficient security rights." I have no idea what
that means, but everything--all My Documents and settings are no accesible
only through My Computer, which is a real pain. Basically my account returned
to default, which I certainly didn't try to do.

Has this ever happened to anyone? I'm on another user account now, where at
least my settings are saved from yesterday. But I'd like access to my
documents again. Thanks.

You may have a corrupted profile, you can Create a new one and copy the data
from the Old corrupted profile to the new but read these links first:

I appreciate the quick response. I followed the first link, and it was
exactly my problem, but I guess my question is--is there no way to recover
my old settings? As I said, I have tons of pictures and music in the "My
Documents" folder of my old account...will I now have to access all of that
remotely?

Also, I set up another account already, but not in safe mode, and things
seem to be saving. I just really would like to get my old settings back...I
don't understand how this happened since I haven't messed with the Documents
and Settings folder anytime recently that I recall.

Thanks again for responding so quickly.

I presume you created a new Account with Admin privileges?.
Then try to copy the Files/folders from the Old Corrupted profile and Log
into the New profile after copying the data and see if all well and sound.
If it is then go a head and delete the old corrupted profile as you don't
need it to reside on your system.

Okay, I tried the second option you mentioned in your first post, and I
restored the system to a week ago, and thankfully everything is just as it
was! Thank you so much, what a relief this is. System Restore solved it, at
least for now.

I tried System Restore, which you mentioned in your first post, and it
worked! Everything is back to normal. I really appreciate it. Thanks!
