Personal Setting Slow to Load

Just started recently. Personal setting take a long time to load on the user
logon screen. After the user is selected it then takes a long time for the
desk top icons to appear. This is happening on my laptop running Windows XP.
Any idea???

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: what changed between the time
things worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the
malware/virus status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what
programs (and versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

If the computer is virus/malware-free, do clean-boot troubleshooting to
see what is making the computer take so long.

What changed between the time things were faster and now? One option is to
do some clean boot troubleshooting.

The User profile clean up service deals with issues were the registry is not
being released by a program at shut down. How can this impact a slow logon?
