personal finance progs

I hope some of you can help me;

My B-i-L has a very old and somewhat complex money prog, called just
"money" I think, that saves it's data in the form "*.mny".

He is beginning to use it to manage his accounts for my disabled sister's
carers, requirements etc, and as he's using public money it's important
it's right and auditable.

Is this a "proper" program, and is the .mny extension recognised, like say
doc?

Is there a standard finance prog filetype that is interchangeable between
programs, if necessary?

The big one - Is there a freeware finance prog for managing these things?

It can and should be pretty simple - it's just for managing payments to
carers, their work hours, and incoming payments from social security - even
the prog he's using is overkill. But above all reliable and if possible,
industry-standard if there is such a thing.

Thanx for any suggestions

Freeware: AceMoney, PLCash Turbocash, or go for commercialware
microsoft money (£30)........think safety features when choosing and
check for spyware reports on google before deciding on a prog like
this........you can potentially loose everything if anyone gets vital
details. Ask experts on security in the security group for freeware
protection.

install: the following freeware protection systems: ad-aware, a host
file, spyblaster, and spyguard to be well protected from such threats
and i also highly recommend hijackthis freeware scan and detection
service as well as ws shredder scan. That about all a non expert can do
to protect from spyware.

also install win patrol, script defender and a good explorer folder
lock/encrypter, as well as not using obvious file names which appear
interesting. + a decent anti virus and firewall of course. + make dummy
encrypted files to destract attention and waste peoples time if you are
real causeous and planning for worst case senario hack attempts.

also think about using a router/proxy

if you get dun in after all that....at least you can say you did your
best.

PS always keep your master password in your head only.and never on your
computer.

all th the above takes no experience in computing to set up and its all
freeware.

Thank you for the responses; it looks as though Acemoney lite will be fine,
now all I have to do is convert him!
