Persistant Windows Explorer Error

I keep getting an error that causes Windows
Explorer to close. It happens when I want to do
things such as copy and paste a file or rename a
file or see the properties of a file etc in Windows
Explorer. I get a message headed 'explorer.exe-Application
Error' and a message that says:

The instruction at "0x70aa8c99" referenced memory
at "0x02e3fb88". The memory could not be "read".

I am given the choice of clicking on OK to
terminate the program or Cancel to debug the program. If I
do either Windows Explorer closes and a number of icons on
the taskbar representing programs running in the
background are no longer on the taskbar although the
programs are still running in the background. If I reopen
Windows Explorer the whole process repeats itself.

If I reboot I can then usually do what I wanted to
do before the error message came up.

This happens on a fairly regular basis. I've tried
reinstalling Windows XP but it hasn't fixed the
problem. I have noticed that this also sometimes happens
on a second computer I have which suggests a program
common to each computer might be causing Windows explorer
to malfunction.

Sometimes after attempting to close the first error
message I get a second message again headed 'explorer.exe-
Application Error' and a message that says:

The exception unknown software exception (0xc015000f)
occurred in the application at location 0x77f6fca7.

I am again given the choice of clicking on OK to
terminate the program or Cancel to debug the program and
another error message comes up similar to the first one
referring to not being able to 'read' memory.

I don't know which program this second error message is
referring to.

I don't want to have to format and reinstall all my
programs to try and determine if one of them causes
Windows Explorer to malfunction as this would be very time
consuming and laborious.

I tried looking up the Microsoft knowledge base and there
was a reference to a roughly similar error message where
the suggestion was that it may be due to a sector on the
hard disk being faulty and hence causing the read error
but I doubt this is the case in my situation. The hard
disks are new and a check disk shows no errors although I
haven't run a physical check of each sector. I will try
running such a check before formatting and starting all
over again. Before I format I would like to see if anyone
is familiar with this problem or could make some
suggestions I could try before resorting to formatting.

The problem by the way is not caused by spyware etc as I
have Pest Patrol Corporate edition installed and
SpySweeper retail edition as well as AVG anti-virus and
they all find no problems. I have tried clicking on
Start/Run and typing in MSCONFIG and disabling all the
programs that were not important during Windows startup
but the problem still occurs although it still could be
due to one of the background programs I haven't tried
disabling.
