PerfOS.dll timeout expires

After upgrading recently to Windows XP, I've started
seeing my hard drive tied up with some unknown activity
and I'm getting repeated error messages (6-10 per day)
about a timeout problem with the PerfOS performance data
collection function. Each message says "There may be a
problem with this this extensible counter or the service
it is collecting data from or the system may have been
very busy when this call was attempted."
Any thoughts on why this is happening and what I can do
about it.
