Product: Windows Operating System
Event ID: 2004
Source: Perfnet
Version: 5.0
Symbolic Name: PERFNET_UNABLE_OPEN_SERVER
Message: Unable to open the Server service. Server performance data will not
be returned. The error code returned is in the first DWORD in the Data
section.
-----

Server is the Display name for LanmanServer (Service name).

This will restore the Server service (lanmanserver) so it will be listed in
Services.msc.

Open Network Connections...
Start | Run | Type: ncpa.cpl | Click OK |
Right click Your Connection | Properties |General tab |
Install button | Highlight: Service | Add button |
Highlight: File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks | Click OK |
Close Network Connections

Open Services and see if Server is set to Automatic and running...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click Server | Startup type should be Automatic |
Click the Start button if not running |

Wes....thanks for response....typing in "ncpa.cpl" I get TWO
CONNECTIONS-they are "1394 Net Adapter Connection"-and says it is
connected.....the other is LAN Realtec RTL 8169 series-that says it is
connected. I HAVE A ROUTER, and I am on Cable Modem. Anyway-when I try the
"Install"->service->Add-> I get a message that Windows was unable to find
any drivers for the device-if you have disk please insert. Anyway...."File
Printer Sharing for MS Networks IS LISTED AND CHECKED in the 1394 Net
Adapter connection. Running "services.msc SHOWS that the SERVER IS
AUTOMATIC and running.....this problem has started aprox 1 week ago....I
even did a scandisk-hate to revert to a system restore...any more advice on
this? Starchild

If the Server service is running, then I wouldn't worry about it.

You didn't change registry setting did you?

If EnablePrefetcher is set to 5 it can cause a Perfnet Error 2004. At least
it did on my machine on 11/30/2003.

Start | Run | Type: regedit | Click OK
Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\
Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters

Look for EnablePrefetcher in the right pane, if the value is not 3,
Double click EnablePrefetcher and change the value to 3.
Values are (0 = disabled, 1 = Application launch prefetching, 2 = Boot
prefetching, 3 = Both prefetching). 3 seems to be the preferred option.

All are set to 3....could this have something to do with my Kaspersky AV and
Firewall-If I am burning a DVD I choose to "Block ALL" in my Kaspersky
firewall.....could this cause this error? Starchild

Hi Starchild,

I just reread your first post and just noticed that you stated that this
error causes your machine to reboot.

This won't fix your problem, but it'll keep your machine from rebooting.

Unless the rebooting is caused by a hardware problem.

It may also help reading a BSOD. Blue Screen Of Death.

Choosing recovery actions if Windows stops unexpectedly

Right click My Computer | Properties | Advanced tab |
Click the Settings button under Startup and Recovery |
Under System Failure | UNCheck: Automatically restart |
Click OK | Click Apply | Click OK

Automatically restart
[[Specifies whether Windows will automatically reboot whenever the system
stops unexpectedly.
You must be logged on as a member of the Administrators group to set
recovery options.]]

[[Event ID: 2004

Explanation
A performance monitoring program tried to open the performance counters for
the Server service. The Server service could not respond to the request. The
Server service is not running or is transitioning between starting and
stopping or vice versa.]]

I do not know what performance monitoring program is causing the Perfnet
2004 Error.

Try disabling the Performance Logs and Alerts service and see what happens.

Open Services...
Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click Performance Logs and Alerts |
If Performance Logs and Alerts is running, click the stop button |
Set to Disabled under Startup type | Click Apply | Click OK |
Close Services.

Maybe another error will appear complaining about Performance Logs and
Alerts service being disabled, we'll find out.
