I'm trying to network my dell(home xp) with my sony(xp media center). I
typed in an ip address(TCP/IP) and subnet mask and the network icon shows a
connection but they are not communicating when I click on the workgroup
name in Microsoft Windows Network in explorer. What am I forgetting?
thanks mc

Are both computers in the same workgroup? Do they have resources that
have been shared?

On the WinXP PCs, create local user account(s), with non-blank
password(s), that have the desired access privileges to the desired shares.
Log on to the other PCs using those account(s), and you will be able to
access the designated shares, provided your network is configured properly.
Also, make sure that WinXP's built-in firewall is disabled on the internal
LAN connection.

Usually, WinXP's Networking Wizard makes it simple and painless -- almost
entirely automatic, in fact. There's a lot of useful, easy-to-follow
information in WinXP's Help & Support files, and here:

Both computers are on the same workgroup, I used "my computer" to set file
sharing and even clicked individual files to set sharing.
I have tried the nework wizard 5 times, everything appeared to apply during
the wizard setup.
But I get the same window message when I click on the workgroup name...
Workgroup is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource...etc

I wonder if the xp media OS is the problem?

And you're using the same user account name and non-blank password on
each computer? That user has been added to the necessary share permissions?

No, not implicitly. WinXP MCE works perfectly well in a workgroup
network.

Are you using a firewall?

Bruce I'm re-reading the sites you've posted, but I must admit "I'm
confused" on the user accounts and access privileges. Its not clear to me
how to set this up, and I do not see where it is part of the network wizard
process..
still looking...

Ok, its working now..
under sharing I had to check "allow users to change my files" and also turn
off the firewall.
I did not need a logon or password....
