Peer to Peer problems with XP

Guest

I have just upgarded windows from 98 to XP Home.
Previously there were 8 computers in total connected through a switch on a
peer to peer network, and all accessed my computer where the data was stored.
Now, with XP, it only allows a maximum of 5 computers to access at once.
Does anyone have any ideas how to sort this problem out?

Would appreciate any help.

Thanks

You can either upgrade to XP Pro which allows 10 concurrent connections
(note that this does not mean 10 *computers* - each computer can have
more than one connection) or install a server operating system on one
of the computers. I would do the latter. Here are some links to
clarify:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=314882 - Inbound connections limit in
XP

concurrent connections:

10 for XP Pro/Tablet/MCE
5 for XP Home
49 for SBS 2000
74 for SBS 2003
Unlimited for full Server O/Ses

Do you mean it's the nbr of connections which prevail. not the nbr of
systems ?
Is it total of configured connections or nbr of active connections at a time
?

Which means if you have one computer with 2 connections used in the same
lan, it's taking 2 of the 5 (XPhome) or of the10(XPpro) posibilities of
peer to peer LAN networking ???

If you have one XP Home system among 7 or 8 XP pro systems ... How does it
works ?

Warm thanks for clarification;

Yes, that is correct.

The number of active connections at a time.

The connection limit refers to the computer with the resources that are
being accessed, not the computers that are accessing the resources.

Upgrade all machines to XP Pro. The behavior you describe is by design.

There's no need to upgrade all of the machines. Only the one that's
acting as a server (storing data for the other ones) needs to be
upgraded.
