Peer to Peer Network, 26 PC's using Windows 98SE, IPX/SPX protocol, a new PC using Win XP Pro

HELP!

I've been tryng to connect a PC using Windows XP Pro, but it didn't connect
at all!

I already stoped browsing for the XP Pro PC, I configured that PC for using
IPX/SPX protocol, but I can't connect or map any drive of the network; the
last message I got, with this configuration is that I'm not able to see the
network because of permitions, but I log without password, like
administrator of this XP PRO PC.

Any idea?

Tks
David

Peer to Peer with "26" computers?? Why IPX?SPX? Is this a netware (Novell)
network?

Thanks Robert, but I don't see how this will fix my problem, because I've
done it (enable guest account and log like administratos with blanck
password to try other possibilities to fix the problem)!

Yes, Peer to Peer with 26 PC's! Almost 10 yaers of that net, and at that
time was easier to set it up with IPX/SPX! No, itns't a Novell Netware!

When I let browsing enabled at XP, then I can see a network with only my machine; when I don't, then I see nothing, except a message about no permition to access the server (myself)...

David

David,

If it isn't a Novell Netware workgroup, then installing IPX/SPX on one computer
won't help. But it may prevent finding the cause of the problem.

First, make sure that all of your systems have identical Windows Networking
components. Do you really need IPX/SPX?
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/fix-network-problems-but-clean-up.html>

Now, if this the first Windows XP computer on this workgroup? If so, you are
possibly experiencing a browser conflict. The Windows 9x and XP browsers don't
coexist well on the network.

Chuck,

It's the first Windows XP on that network, operating well with IPX/SPX for
almost 10 years; it growed from 2 PC's to 26 PC's.
1. first, I instaled IPX/SPX on the XP PC, disabled the TCPIP on that
network card, but it didn't functioned.
2. I disabled browser at XP machine but it didn't functioned.
3. No firewall is beeing used, neither anti-virus
RestrictAnonymous was set to 00000000.
Guest account is enabled.
Obs: when I let browsing enabled at XP, then I can see a network with only
my machine; when I don't, then I see nothing, except a message about no
permition to access the server (myself)... From the other machines I
could'nt map my PC, too!
I need to prepare a file server using XP(to use RAID and SATA), but I can't
set it up!!

David,

Your post here shows that you've spent some time here looking at issues that
other folks have had. That's good. But I'm not sure that you have all of the
details, nor how all the details work together.

Please spend a few minutes and read my File Sharing (Windows Networking)
troubleshooting guide. It's organised from the bottom layer (physical) to the
top layer (file sharing permissioning). You really have to solve network
problems in that order - if you don't get connectivity working, how are you
going to test file sharing?
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html>

Now most experience here is based around Windows Networking, which normally uses
TCP/IP, and NetBIOS Over TCP/IP. You can test TCP/IP connectivity using the
"ping" command. You best test by pinging by address, not by name. And you get
the address from "ipconfig".
<http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/reading-ipconfig-and-diagnosing.html>

Windows Networking will use IPX/SPX, but you won't be able to ping other
computers. When it works, you can do "\\Computername". Start with
"\\ThisComputer", then do "\\OtherComputer".

But if the other computers only use IPX/SPX, that's what you gotta use. It is
called "protocol" for a reason. Both the client and the server have to have a
common protocol (TCP/IP or IPX/SPX - your choice).

Once that works, then move up and try and figure out the browsing issue. That's
still more fun. Run "browstat status" from 2 or more computers, and compare the
results. And post back here.
