Peculiar behaviors ....!!!

Hi..

Whenever I try to 'Open' (or 'Open for All Users') Start>Programs> 'any
menu'/ 'sub-menu' by right click, the Option Window for 'Move' comes up
first, and on 'Cancel' is followed by 'Copy' and then it opens !!!

I have noticed similar behaviour when I click on 'Play All' or some similar
'Common Task' in the left of Folders as opened in Explorer.

My ZoneAlarm shows Windows Explorer and not Internet Explorer connecting to
the internet !!!

After every start of Windows, Windows Explorer uses 90/95 % of CPU (P4
1.3GHz) for 3/4 minutes with nearly full memory usage (256 MB RD Ram),
ZoneAlarm indicating Windows Explorer trying to connect to the internet.

Yes, yes...my NAV is up-to-date...AdAware, Spybot, SpySweeper etc ...all
updated ...don't show anything...

Even online virus and other checks for Pests,Trojan etc have not found
anything....

Any ideas, please??
Thanks..

All self inflicted isn't it. Let explorer connect where it wants. Remove those things from the context menu as they are designed to be toolbar buttons only.

I have the same problem with "Play All." Selecting Play All gives me
the option to Move To and Copy To in succession. It started recently
and I have no idea why. I'm just living with it as an annoyance. I
just checked and don't have the problem with right-clicking to open from
the start menu.
Regarding Windows Explorer wanting to access the internet on start-up.
Try installing X-Setup Pro -- but be very careful with it because it's a
powerful tweaker. There may be something starting that you can control.

I don't think I would let Windows Explorer access the internet unless I
knew why. You might also want to stop things like QuickTime and Real
Player and anything else you think you can, one by one, and see if the
problem stops.

You can also check for info at annoyances.org. They have lists of
Windows problems that might help.

Thakns Mr Anon :))

I have checked all the startup programs....nothing suspicious...and I have
disabled Real, Quicktime etc...but you missed the real peculiarity....my
Windows Explorer connects to the internet instead of Internet Explorer...and
if I stop that, my IE stops working !!!

Strange???

Let explorer connect to the internet. It probably actually isn't. Want a more certain answer give the detail of what ports/address. Remember not all traffic that goes out is destined for the internet. The internet starts at where your ISP connects to the internet not at your computer.

You added Copy To and Move To to a context menu, remove it.

Thanks a lot David...
Though I do not remember adding them, I removed the entries Copy To, Move To
and Send To under

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesytemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers

Now the Opening Menu Problem has been solved. Thanks again.

But now nothing happens on clicking Play All.....!!! ( not a serious
problem, though)

Earlier, as had been advised by some one big (!), I had blocked the Explorer
from connecting ( to whatever ) as s/he had said that Explore has no
business connecting and there was no problem.
Then suddenly I found that IE was unable to connect to the internet, though
I normally use Slim Browser.

On some detective work, I found that instead of iexplore.exe which used to
connect to the web, now
explorer.exe was trying to connect, which I had blocked. Allowing it to
connect, IE can connect now, though I have kept it blocked from acting as a
server.

Any thoughts??

Windows sends out lots of control messages, often in explorer's name. It will send stuff out to find gateways, routers, appliences. Your ISP won't allow them (and neither will anything else on the public internet) to go any where cos that's what standards say (but they'll hop 4 times on a private internet/network). Also it will be testing the connection for networking. Again your ISP will just drop them. Some rules are external to your computer. But blocking explorer just confuses it somewhat.

Explorer's main job is to provide Start, Taskbar, and desktop (an explorer window of special size). Both IE and Explorer load components to browse locally or the internet. Either can load them.

Type c:\ in the address bar of IE or www.microsoft.com in explorer's address bar. Folder and most namespace browsing components are in shell32.dll. The internet browsing is in shdocvw.dll (plus is also used to browse locally).

This is component software.
