PCs hang when opening files or brow directories

Can somebody give me an idea as to what might be causing
this problem? We are experiencing an increasing number
of instances where our workstations freeze up when we try
to load a file, save a file or browse a directory over the
network. When I say freeze, I don't mean that the machine
locks up and the user has to reboot the computer.
Eventually control is given back to the user but it will
take as long as two to three minutes before that occurs
and the users are getting increasing impatient with this
situation. I have supplied a brief description of our
network at the bottom of this message for anybody whose
interest. Any help in fixing this problem would be
greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Steve Rulison

Network Environment:
The network has a total of 30 workstations, which are made
up of Dell Optiplex Gx1, GX 110, GX 150 and Precision 420
workstations. All are running Windows 2000 with Service
Pack 3. All of the workstation network cards are 3com
920 Integrated Fast Ethernet 10/100s.

We have two identical HP netserver lp2000r fileserver and
two HP Procurve 4108gl 10/100 switches, which are located
at, separate sites and linked by a T1. The network
protocol is TCP/IP. There is a total of three domain
controllers, the two file servers and a white-box server
that we use for our database server. Specifications for
the two HP netserver fileservers are as follows:

OS Windows 2000-Advanced Server with Service Pack 3
1 Athlon MP III 1GH processor 265+ cache
1 Gig of memory
2 9 Gig SCSI drives for OS in a RAID (Mirrored)
3 18 Gig SCSI drives in RAID (Striped) configuration for
DATA

We are running Norton Antivirus version 8
We do have roaming profiles installed

Hello Marina.
I ran the ipconfig/all and found that the ip address for
the alternate DNS server was pointing to a server that is
not set up to be a DNS server. I went into the TCP/IP
configuration on my NIC and removed the ip address for the
alternate DNS. May this will correct the problem.

Thanks for your help.

Steve Rulison.
