PCMCIA

Everytime I plug a PCMCIA card into my notebook I get found new hardware
message and PCMCIA UNKNOWN_MANUFACTURER shows in device manager under other
devices.
The are no drivers for this card XP should configure it once installed but
it is not doing it.

What Vendor, type and model is the card ?

If Windows XP is supposed to have native drivers it will would
automatically load them. Other devices is the "Catch-All" category
when a device is detected, but no drivers are available for it.

It's not just the one card, it happens to both of them, one is a Brother
CI-100 Printer card and the other is a Kodak picture card reader. They
worked once before

Then the problem lies with the PCMCIA slots themselves,
not the individual cards plugged into them. Check your Device
Manager, PCMCIA category and make sure that both slots are
listed and have no Yellow Exclamation or Red Icon for either.
You may have to remove & redetect the PCMCIA controllers,
to clear this error. Before doing this remove all cards from the
slots and Uninstall any devices listed in Other Devices as well.

I think the slot maybe faulty, I have done a repair install and it is still
the same, tried removing the PCMCIA controllers in device manager and
restarted, it found new hardware which was PCI to Cardbus Bridge and then
got a error message about sysdata.xml or something like that, I don't really
want to do a clean install at this stage.

As a suggestion, are you quite sure you are plugging the cards into the
correct slot? On my machine (Toshiba Satellite) there are two slots stacked
one on top of the other. It is not obvious (unless you know) there are two
slots. The top slot is for type 1 cards and the bottom for type 2. I wasn't
aware of this and when I first intalled my network PC Card, I installed it
into the bottom (type 2 slot) by accident and everything worked fine. The
next time I inserted the card I installed it in the top slot and ran around
in circles for a hour trying to get it to work until I discovered there were
two slots and I needed to insert the card in the type 2 slot. Maybe you
have a similar problem.

This Compaq Presario 700 has only one slot, I have put in another HDD and
did a clean install which gave me the same result and wiggling the card I
get beeps from the system like it has found and configured the hardware, so
I guess there is something loose in there somewhere.
