PCI slots do not work

J

Joakim Johansson

Hi there,

Abit AN8, AMD3200+, 2Gb, Bios AN820,

My PCI slots used to work (< 1 year ago) but I haven't used them for a
while. Now when installed my soundcard, XP doesn't find it. I have tried
the soundcard at a different computer, and it worked. I have also tried
with 3 different PCI-network cards, and ONE(!) of them worked. It's
nothing special with the working network card (not very old or so)

I have contacted Abit support 2 weeks ago, with no answer. I have also
seen a couple of other guys with the same/similiar at random forums
fumbling in the dark...

If you know anything that might help, please let me know.

Not familier with most bios's these days, but many do list the PCI devices
it sees, is there a listing of PCI devices it locates at startup? Does it
list it?

Make sure you don't have any funny settings like disable PCI or something.
I don't think most even have that, but there are always things like
"disable serial/parrellel" or so. I'd also try a "reset BIOS config" I used
to support some older boards that just decided to forget hardware was
their, and then a bios reset made them start seeing the devices again.

Lastly, try initiating the "detect new hardware" via XP itself. Meaning, do
n't rely on the windows automatically saying I found new hardware. Bring up
your Device Manager, and right click on your computer, and select scan for
new hardware.
